Statement of Senators Levin and McCain on Thursday’s Senate Armed Services Committee Hearing

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

WASHINGTON – Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Ranking Member John McCain, R-Ariz., made the following statement regarding the committee’s nomination hearing scheduled for Thursday:

“The Senate Armed Services Committee will hold the previously scheduled confirmation hearing for General Joseph F. Dunford, USMC, to be the Commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, on Thursday, November 15, 2012.  The change of command for that position, which is now held by General John R. Allen, USMC, is scheduled for early February.  The uncertainties surrounding the schedule of the new Congress in January make it necessary for the confirmation process for General Dunford to be completed before the end of this year.

“Because of the Department of Defense Inspector General’s pending review, the confirmation hearing for General Allen to be Commander of U.S. European Command and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander has been postponed until a later date. That change of command is expected no earlier than March.”
