Discovery Channel Cancels “American Guns,” Possibly “Sons of Guns” Too

According to multiple sources, the show American Guns has been cancelled following the Connecticut school shooting on Friday. After a quick check of the Discovery channel’s press-only site I can confirm that the show is no longer listed under the list of programs. The show had been in hiatus after completing its second season and did not have any additional new episodes to air, but it now appears that the show will not return for a third season and will no longer be aired on Discovery. Also curiously missing from the list of programs is Sons of Guns, the reality show on Discovery that kicked off the rash of firearms related shows in the last few years, but there has been no official word on that yet that I can see. . .

NBC Cancels ALL Gun Related Programming

3-Gun Nation is a show that follows the top competitors in the United States as they make their way towards the 3-Gun national championship in Las Vegas, NV. It wasn’t a particularly interesting or exciting show, but it was a firearms related sports show that was picked up by NBC and for that (if nothing else) I liked it and watched whenever it was on. Apparently, following the shooting in Connecticut, NBC sports has decided to put an “indefinite moratorium” on shooting related shows. By the way, this is the same NBC Sports that sponsors the “New Products” section at SHOT Show. Update from 3GN after the jump . . .

Gun Rights Advocates: A Little Less Conversation A Little More Action Please

The term “assault rifle” does not apply to modern semi-automatic rifles. Technically. In popular parlance, it does. Thanks to the gun control industry and its media lapdogs, any black, scary-looking semi-automatic rifle is an assault rifle. Period. Building on that victory, exploiting the horror of the Sandy Hook massacre, gun control advocates are once again seeking to infringe upon on Americans’ Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms by manipulating the language. Led by the President of the United States (no less), they’re calling for a “conversation about guns.” Writing for The Atlantic, Conor Friedersdorf shines the cold light of truth on the gun control industry’s Orwellian suggestion . . .

Do We Have the Courage to Really Stop This?

Nicholas Kristof has a piece in Sunday’s The New York Times celebrating making political hay out of the atrocity in Newtown. And he makes what has become my favorite anti-gun proposal: “In the harrowing aftermath of the school shooting in Connecticut, one thought wells in my mind: Why can’t we regulate guns as seriously as we do cars?” I’ve addressed just this kind of thing in detail before, but in light of the Sandy Hook shootings, Kristof’s little bit of sophistry deserves its own takedown . . .

President Obama’s Self-Defense Strategy: “Wait for the Good Guys”

“We know that there were other teachers who barricaded themselves inside classrooms, and kept steady through it all,” President Obama said at last night’s interfaith memorial service for the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, “and reassured their students by saying ‘wait for the good guys, they’re coming;’ ‘show me your smile.’ And we know that good guys came.” Yes, but they came too late for 20 children and six adults. Perhaps if someone in the school had been armed . . . And while we’re talking about failed rhetoric, am I the only one who thought that the President’s decision to issue a [thinly veiled] call for new gun control during the memorial was an abomination? Has he no shame? No sense of decorum, dignity or respect?
