Hahn to Oppose Bill That Would Hurt Air Quality

Jun 20, 2012 Issues: Energy, Environment

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn announced her intention to vote against H.R. 4480, a Republican bill that would gut the Clean Air Act and block the Environmental Protection Agency from finalizing important air quality rules.

“Los Angeles has some of the worst air quality in the nation, a problem that will be made worse by this bill. The American Lung Association has given our region an “F” for ozone and particle pollution. A California State University Fullerton study in 2008 found bad air costs the South Coast Basin $22 billion in lost productivity, health costs and premature deaths.”

“Developing clean energy technologies and enforcing our clean air laws are critical to the health and well being of the people of Los Angeles. That is why we should invest in electric vehicle infrastructure and renewable fuels so we can clean our air and free ourselves from dirty fossil fuels. Instead of moving our nation forward, this bill is a gift to oil companies that will continue our dependence on oil. A dependence that results in higher rates of respiratory disease, especially among children, and ever increasing gas prices. I cannot support such a bill and will vote no.”
