Fitzpatrick Condemns Ahmadinejad Speech Before United Nations General Assembly

LANGHORNE, PA – Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08) today condemned the Iranian regime for addressing the United Nations General Assembly and questioned the decision by the United Nations to permit President Ahmadinejad to speak on Yom Kippur, the holiest of Jewish holidays.

 

"I am extremely disappointed to see that the United Nations has allowed President Ahmadinejad to speak before the General Assembly this morning," said Fitzpatrick.  "This is a man who should not be provided with a global stage on any day, least of all on Yom Kippur.  His direct threats to the safety and security of the United States and our ally Israel should have precluded him from addressing an organization which seeks global security through peaceful cooperation."

 

Last week, Fitzpatrick introduced a bipartisan resolution condemning the scheduled appearance and urging the United Nations to cancel, or at the very least reschedule, Ahmadinejad's speech before the General Assembly. 

 

Iranian President Ahmadinejad has often called for the destruction of Israel, demanding for it to be “wiped off the map,” and has consistently denied the evidence of the Holocaust, an event that took the lives of more than 6 million Jewish people. 

 

Just this week while in New York, Ahmadinejad declared that the Israeli people "represent minimal disturbances [to history] that come into the picture and are then eliminated."
