Capps Announces Applications for DREAM Act Deferred Status Now Being Accepted

Santa Barbara, CA – Today, Congresswoman Lois Capps (CA-23) announced that United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is now accepting applications for consideration of deferred status for certain undocumented young adults living in the United States and encouraged young people on the Central Coast to apply. USCIS is taking this action at the direction of a memorandum issued by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on June 15th. In general, the opportunity for deferred status applies to those young adults who were brought to this country as children and are either pursuing their education or serving in the military and do not have a criminal record. According to estimates from the Immigration Policy Center, 298,030 undocumented young people aged 15-30 in California may benefit immediately from deferred action status, including 7,180 in California’s 23rd Congressional District. Capps will be hosting workshops in the coming weeks to help young people and their families navigate the USCIS application process. Details will be forthcoming.

By providing an avenue for undocumented young adults who are pursuing their education or served in our military to remain in the communities they call home, we are recognizing the commitment they are making to our country. It simply does not make sense to deny young adults, brought to this country as minors by their parents, the opportunity to further contribute their talents to our country. President Obama’s leadership on this issue has created a new day for thousands of young people on the Central Coast and their families,” said Capps.
