Results

Members of Congress returned to their home states last week following House passage of a bill to preserve the current tax rate for all Americans through 2013. While I’m in Mississippi, I’ll spend time visiting with folks across the state talking about my record in Congress of eliminating government waste, removing regulations, protecting the priorities of rural communities, honoring public servants, promoting innovation and advocating for intellectual disabilities.

Guest Column In Roll Call - Harper: Restraint Guidelines Endanger Children

Every day in schools across the United States, students are being subjected to barbaric and potentially deadly treatment in the form of seclusion and restraint. According to leading education researchers and child trauma experts, as well as the Government Accountability Office, the use of these practices — which include forcibly pinning students to the ground, strapping them to chairs or locking them in closets — is dangerous and traumatic for everyone involved, including teachers, other school personnel and students. Their use has been linked to physical and emotional harm and even death. It is a practice that amounts to institutionalized child abuse, and it has no place in our schools.

Need To Know - Disabilities Internship

The Congressional Internship Program for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities is the first of its kind. Originally launched as a pilot program in conjunction with George Mason University’s Mason LIFE program and the Committee on House Administration, this formal internship provides these students with the exciting educational and enrichment opportunities typically afforded to congressional interns in Washington, D.C.

Harper, Engel Reestablish House Fragile X Caucus

Need To Know - Team Player

Yesterday, I introduced the “TEAM Act” which provides three separate legislative responses to better align existing federal programs providing publicly-funded systems and supports to focus on one uniform goal – ensuring that every youth with a significant disability has the opportunity, encouragement and support to become gainfully employed in an integrated setting, pursue a post-secondary education, and contribute to and engage in meaningful ways in typical community settings once they leave high school.

Harper Introduces Intellectual Disabilities Legislative Package
