Crisis may be needed for GOP to agree to critical cuts, suggests lawmaker - The Hill, January 10, 2011

Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) on Monday suggested it could take a crisis for Republicans to get serious about taxing, spending and repairing the nation's dismal financial situation.

"There are those of us who would like to move sooner," said Schrader, referring to reconfiguring and expanding cuts planned for the federal government as well as scaling back the Bush tax cuts which are also set to expire next year. "[I]t may take a crisis when people see these tax cuts expiring and the defense cuts coming into play, that you get a lot of Republicans getting a change of heart and wanting to do the right thing."

Schrader went on to suggest that the political will to do "the right thing" may not be available until after the November elections.

"It could be after the election, to be very honest," predicted the second term Congressman as reported by the Salem, Ore., Statesman Journal on Tuesday.
