  1. I spoke on the House Floor this morning about the need for Congress to move past partisanship and make this institution work for America. I hope you can take a minute to watch it!

Please join your fellow legislators and sign the Children's Cancer Caucus. This is tough to watch, but easy for you to act. Please.

    • I enthusiastically support strong gun and ammunition control including assault or military-style weaponry and am grateful that Congresswoman Hahn has written legislation to accomplish this goal. It must not be watered down, filtered, but tightly written, stringently defended and passed without haste to protect children like those of Sandy Hook Elementary school who were sacrificed on the altar of 'gun freedom'. It is ludicrous to imagine that our children aren't even safe in their own schools.

    •  Join us for the California Maritime Leadership Symposium at the Sacramento Convention Center on February 20-21, 2013. The Symposium has become one of the premier events focused on briefing Sacramento's policymakers on key matters related to the entire Maritime Transportation System. It is the only comprehensive forum for port executives, commissioners and other stakeholders across the state to seek resolution to the growing challenges the Maritime Transportation System faces. 6. Proud to be speaking with grassroots activists from No Labels about how we can make Congress work for the American people.
  7. This morning, I toured S.O. Tech and Green Vets LA in Carson with President Jim Cragg. Green Vets employs veterans from the local VA. Their program is a model for making sure that our men and women in uniform are taken care of when they return home.

  12. For too long, the truckers who are the backbone of the international trade industry have not received the wages and benefits they deserve. This deal is a huge step forward, and I really hope that ports across the country will recognize the ...important role played by our truckers.

Truckers servicing the port work hard, and they deserve compensation and benefits that reflect that. I’m celebrating a big and long overdue win for these hard working truck drivers and their families today.

  14. As a California state legislator, as a member of Congress, and as Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis has been a tenacious advocate of working Americans. Her tireless efforts have pulled this country back from the worst unemployment crisis in d...ecades, and I know she will stand as a role model for a generation of young Latina women. I’m sure there are still great things left in Secretary Solis’ future.

  17. This morning, I had the pleasure of joining federal, state, and local leaders for the groundbreaking of the Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement. It’s projects like this that I’m going to champion on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee—investments that get people to work today, and give us the transportation and goods movement network we need to compete in the global economy.

  19. I am proud to be sworn in with the most diverse and representative Congress in our history. The 113th Congress has more women in it than any before, and it is an honor to be a part of that. But above all, it is an honor to be representing t...his district.

There is a lot of strength, a lot of ingenuity, and a lot of entrepreneurship in our district. I’ve represented so many of these communities for over a decade on the Los Angeles City Council, and this feels like coming home. I’m looking forward to fighting for these communities again.

I am going to fight for legislation that will help us create good paying jobs in our communities and empower small businesses to hire and grow. I am going to fight to harness the power of a strong and secure port to open new opportunities for our communities and our businesses. And I am going to fight to end the scourge of gun violence that has plagued our streets since long before the tragedy in Newtown.

We’ve got problems, but we have more possibility, and I am going to spend every day dedicating myself to the hard working people of California’s 44th Congressional District.

  20. It took a lot longer than it should have, but we finally got the compromise we needed to protect hard working families from the fiscal cliff.

This deal will protect middle class families and small businesses climbing out of the recession from being pushed off the fiscal cliff. It extends unemployment benefits, saving millions still struggling to find work from having the rug pulled out from unde...r them. It helps us reduce our deficit by asking the wealthiest to pay their fair share, and preserves our promise to our seniors in Social Security and Medicare.

Now, a compromise means everybody gave up something. I am disappointed that an extension of the payroll tax cut was not in this deal. But the American people wanted compromise, and with Vice President Biden getting in there to close the deal, that's what we did.

  21. Tonight, I'm ringing in the New Year at the National Archives commemorating the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Happy New Year from Washington!
  22. In 11 years, I have not missed a Polar Bear swim on New Year’s Day. But this year, I will be in Washington, working as hard as I can to avert the fiscal cliff that is threatening so many of the hard working Americans I am so proud to repres...ent.

I think a bracing plunge in the ocean is shock enough! The people in my communities shouldn't get shoved over the fiscal cliff too. I'm sorry not to be there, angry that Congress has waited so long to address this issue, but this is the work we were entrusted to do. I just hope we can come together to do it.
