The Open Cloud, er, +OpenStack  , sure is dominating press mentions, according to Wired. http://insights.wired.com/profiles/blogs/openstack-wins-2012-pr-hype-battle-for-cloud-computing-platforms#axzz2H3PtMSXa

One thing I'm seeing, as we write our book, "the Age of Context" that there's a huge amount of interest in a more flexible cloud. Open Source FTW!

Which cloud is your business betting on?

I just published a poll that you can watch instantly: http://gopollgo.com/which-cloud-is-your-business-betting-on

Hi Robert +Robert Scoble, thank you for popping this topic out.
Please allow me to exaggerate my thinking.

From a developer point of view, after browsing dozens of webpages about OpenStack, I still don't have a clear sense of what I can really do with it. All the docs are about how to set it up, how to install a VM on my laptop to simulate a cloud, or how to develop OpenStack itself.
But I just don't care.

I want to know how I'm going to connect my Eclipse or other IDE to it and get some work done.

On the other hand, if you consider Amazon EC2 or Google Cloud, they don't confuse the user with all that stuff: it's an internal issue.

I think OpenStack will really take off when it takes a user-centric perspective, far from sysadmin speech.

OpenStack is great, but it currently looks "Linux early days" too much!

Do you treat your best customers like gods? SmugMug does.

They sent +Scott Jarvie a hoodie with his name stitched into it.

Scott is one of the top wedding and people photographers in the world and loves SmugMug ( http://www.smugmug.com ).

Since I am talking about what a startup did well in the comments I will bag on Startups. Turns out a lot of them don't do things as well as Smugmug....Expand this post »

Great writeup +Robert Scoble...but something tells me if we ordered +Scott Jarvie  a new one today, it would say "The Jarvie" not "Jarvie" :)

+Scott Jarvie on the beach with his HUGE flashlight. Great piece of technology. The whole thing is one big ass LED with a big ass battery. Cost? $400. See his latest photo to see how he used it to light up the cliffs in Half Moon Bay. That's here: https://plus.google.com/100962871525684315897/posts/HTYXH9YjBJ8

This is what real photographers do: they bring their own lights. Heheh.

I told you it was an awesome sunset tonight and Barry is a real master. Hear him talk about making this at http://soundcloud.com/scobleizer

When +Scott Jarvie says "meet me at +Robert Scoble's house for a sunset shoot"... you say okay.

I'm glad I did, and as Robert was quick to point out this area where a small stream was flowing into the ocean, I will be quick to say "thanks Robert, great location".... and here you have it. I do hope the colors are decent. I'm not used to doing an edit on a little laptop.

Sunset date: January 3rd, 2013
Location: Half Moon Bay, California.

Nice photo of me and +Maryam Scoble. Just shows that if you give a great photographer a few minutes with great background and light you'll get magic.

It's amazing to me when I hear that famous execs don't give photographers much time to work. That makes no sense to me at all.

Happy New Year! A contextual future awaits. So says I in the BBC below. Or, as +Guy Kawasaki put it today at breakfast: a predictive one.

I predict you will have a great year.

Speaking of which, I hear there will be a bunch of geeks tonight at the The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay. Who should we call to bail +Brian Solis out of jail? Last time we partied together we almost got kicked out of France.

Rackspace's startup liaison officer helps small teams have a huge impact with cloud computing technology.
Introduction
As Startup Liaison for Rackspace, the Open Cloud Computing Company, I go around the world with Rocky Barbanica looking for what's happening on the bleeding edge of technology and report that here.

++++++++

If you are looking to contact me, email is best: scobleizer@gmail.com but my cell phone number is +1-425-205-1921.

++++++++

I'm a geek who grew up in Silicon Valley (my dad was an engineer at Lockheed) and since 1985 I've been building online communities. In 2000 I started my technology blog, http://scobleizer.com, and my life has been on a rocketship ever since. In 2003-2006 I worked at Microsoft as an evangelist and one of the five guys who started Microsoft's famous Channel9 video community.

I'm now working at Rackspace as Startup Liaison Officer (I go around the world to study and make media about world-changing startups). You'll also see my videos on http://youtube.com/scobleizer but the best place to watch me now is on Google+, on Twitter or on my blog. Where I do my best work, though, is on Rackspace's Small Teams, Big Impact, site.

The real-time streaming web is changing my life faster than I can imagine, and lets me keep in touch with thousands of technology and business innovators all around the world.

I'm also the father of three sons, Patrick, 17, Milan, 4, and Ryan, 2. Lots of fun and they are all geeks in training too.

Anyway, visit some of my links to see more about me, especially my Wikipedia profile (I didn't edit any of it, that was done by people in the community) and feel free to drop me a line at scobleizer@gmail.com anytime you need something or want to talk about being on one of my video shows.

Oh, and, yes, I do answer my own cell phone and I do include that number on the Internet for you to use: +1-425-205-1921 and have for several years. I live in Half Moon Bay near the Ritz and would love to meet up with geeks/entrepreneurs if you are in town and I'm available.

The camera equipment I use? On my YouTube channel I use a Canon 5D MKII camera (costs about $2,500) with a 17-40mm F4.0 Canon L Series lens (costs about $900) and a Rode Stereo microphone (costs about $300) along with a Manfrotto monopod (costs about $100).

On building43.com we use two Panasonic HVX-200 cameras which are more expensive but optimized for shooting video (the Canon also does still photos and is expensive).
