And Israel’s New Skinny Model Ban

Carly Rae Jepsen’s Long Underwear Trick: Carly Rae Jepsen used a bit of wardrobe intuition for her on-air New Year’s Eve performance. At first it seemed that the “Call Me Maybe” singer, who was stationed in the near-freezing Times Square for an appearance on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, was simply dressed in a maxi skirt and crop top. But beating the bitter cold, she tweeted, “Had a blast performing in Times Square! Nobody knew I had long johns under my skirt…till now;)” [The Cut]

Kim Kardashian’s First Maternity Outfit: Did you really think that Kim Kardashian would suddenly dress in mumus for a entire nine-month pregnancy? Negative. The lead Kardashian debuted her very first maternity look on New Year’s Eve and true to form, it’s tight and sparkly. She posted a photo of the cleavage-baring ensemble on Tumblr along with a sweet little note. “It’s true!! Kanye and I are expecting a baby. We feel so blessed and lucky…” [Racked]

Stella McCartney Named in Queen’s List

New Year Honors 2013.

Cue the champagne. Stella McCartney—legendary English fashion designer and daughter of former Beatle Paul McCartney—has been named to Queen Elizabeth’s New Year Honors List for 2013. McCartney has had quite a year, from designing the uniforms for team GB at the 2012 Olympics to receiving the award for Designer of the Year in the U.K. But the Queen’s list is an even bigger deal, recognizing the service and achievements of extraordinary people in the United Kingdom. A Happy New Year, indeed.

Couple Agree to Settlement of Lawsuits

Seemingly accomplishing what Congress cannot, haute divorcés Tory and Chris Burch have reached a settlement in time for the new year. “Battle of the Burches” as the press coined their very public legal dispute, is now officially over, reports WWD. The exes’ legal woes began earlier this year when Chris sued Tory in October, claiming that her company’s board members had blocked him from selling his large stake in her fashion house (which Tory established with a large investment from her then-husband in 2004). Tory then waged her own suit against Chris, contending his claims and declaring much of the merchandise at his new chain C. Wonder as a “copycat” of her own designs. Lengthy features in Vanity Fair, WWD, and even an on-air piece on Rock Center soon followed, stirring up one of fashion’s biggest feuds in 2012.

But now the once couple have settled out of court. And though their settlement terms are confidential, Tory Burch LLC has announced two new minority investors in the company. Capital Partners LLC and General Atlantic LLC have presumably purchased a portion of Chris Burch’s stake in the brand. It’s not been announced what Chris’s new investment weighs in at (pre-settlement both he and Tory each owned a 28.3% company stake), though Chris has confirmed that he’s still a “significant investor” in Tory’s brand, telling WWD that he’s “confident” in the company’s “continued success.” Tory Burch did not offer comment on her ex-husband, but of her new investors she said, “They are completely aligned with our long-term approach to building our brand and share our vision for growth globally.” Best wishes for the new year, Burches!

Stella McCartney gets an OBE: The Queen of England has included designer Stella McCartney on her New Years Honor List—meaning that she’s been bestowed with an OBE—for designing Team Great Britain’s many Olympic uniforms. This latest honor tops off a landmark winning year for McCartney who was also named Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. [Vogue UK]

The Next Web breaks down their style by the numbers.

The differences between Apple and PC users often inspire heated debates between both sides. This summer it was even revealed that searches on Orbitz reportedly steer Mac users towards more expensive hotel reservations than those booking with a PC. But now comes hardened evidence about the Mac user’s demographics—female Mac users to be specific. Silicon Valley company BlueStacks combined recent Nielsen statistics with their own research compiled from their 1.1 million Facebook fans, yielding some pretty interesting results about Apple’s girlier fans. It seems that these ladies have a pretty distinct sense of style, creating an image that The Next Web calls, “pretty hot, if awkwardly dressed.”

Among the fashion-related findings are:

Fashion feud between Madonna and Patricia Field

And FLOTUS rocks neon nails.

Patricia Field’s Madonna Feud: Famed costume designer Patricia Field has accused Madonna of stealing one of her designs. Field, who operates a store in New York’s East Village, sells a baseball hat emblazoned with ‘Vogue’ in block lettering. Yesterday, her company’s Tumblr posted an entry titled “Madonna stole our Vogue Hats!!,” detailing a similar “Vogue” hat that Madge is selling as merchandise on her MDNA tour. [HuffPo]

Herbal Essences Brings Back the 90s: Hair care brand Herbal Essences is getting back to its roots, so to speak. The drug store purveyor is feeling the same sense of 90s nostalgia that’s taken hold of the fashion industry by reissuing their classic ‘smooth’ and ‘shine’ botanical collections that were discontinued in 2006. The product, its packaging, and inimitable scents are all the same, save an updated sulfate and silicone-free formula to keep up with current beauty trends. It’s meant to “re-create the impact of the original campaign that resonated so strongly with women in the Nineties but with a modern sensibility,” says Walter Geiger, the company’s vice president. President Obama’s Christmas Day Outfit Disaster: President Obama made a really awkward wardrobe choice yesterday while vacationing in Hawaii. Appearing at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii for Christmas dinner (with a chic FLOTUS by his side) the President wore a short-sleeved oversized turquoise collared shirt, which he tucked into a pair of pleated khakis—his voluminous top draping over the waistline of his pants. May we suggest a new outlook on vacation casual? [HuffPo]

Terry Richardson to Direct Gaga Doc: Lady Gaga’s upcoming album Artpop is coming with a Terry Richardson-shot documentary. The pop star tweeted, “Merry Christmas little monsters! Terry Richardson @Terry_World is making a #LadyGagaMOVIE documenting my life, the creation of ARTPOP + you!” [The Cut]

And Bernard Arnault’s Belgian citizenship will probably be rejected.

Belgium Doesn’t Want Bernard Arnault: It looks like Bernard Arnault’s request for Belgian citizenship will be rejected. The LVMH CEO requested a Belgian earlier this year, for “personal” reasons, reportedly due to President Hollande’s new tax increases on France’s high-income sector. News of his request was met with a hasty coverage by French paper Libération, depicting Arnault with a suitcase and captioned saying, “Get lost you rich idiot!” Arnault has not lived in Belgium for the minimum term of three years before applying for a passport—one of the requirements of Belgian citizenship. Fashion's Groundbreaking Gender Benders

When Casey Legler made headlines in November as Ford's first female male model, she became one of only a few gender bending women to make a mainstream impression. Yet, Legler joins a burgeoning movement of women, transgender men, and gender nonconforming people who adopt menswear as their own on the fashion blog dapperQ. Watch video of dapperQ's He Said/We Said photo shoot, where transgressors interpret the Hermes men's spring 2013 collection as their own.
