Redistricting Info for Contra Costa Residents
As you know, California’s congressional districts have recently undergone redistricting. In California, a bipartisan commission of citizens redrew the “lines” - creating new congressional districts to appropriately create new districts based on population shifts brought to light by the 2010 Census.
Starting January 2013, when the 113th Congress is sworn in, some California citizens will be represented by a different member of Congress than their current member. The 113th Congress was elected in November 2012, but will not be sworn in until January 2013. For example, much of Contra Costa, which had previously been part of the 7th district or the 10th district, will be part of the 11th district in the 113th Congress.
I am honored to have been elected to represent the 11th district in the 113th Congress. And while I am honored to continue to represent a number of communities that I’ve had the privilege to serve in years past, a number of communities, including Vallejo, Vacaville and parts of Martinez, will fall under new representation as a result of this redistricting. Again, while the election has already taken place to determine the representatives of the new districts, the change in representation will not take place until the 113th Congress is sworn in in early January.
It is important for you to determine if your representation has changed and get familiar with your new Representative if need be. A good way to find out if your area has been redistricted into new representation has been provided by the Sacramento Bee. This interactive map allows you to enter your current address and view how your district looks in the 112th Congress and how it will change during the 113th Congress.
Feel free to contact my office if you have any further questions regarding how the redistricting will affect you and your community.
