Judge Hoyt was a pioneer in what is now called juvenile justice. This photo was probably used in connection with stories on the opening of the new Children's Court building, at 137 E. 22d St. in August, 1915. (the building still stands as part of Baruch College). Also, a law for the first time separating New York criminal courts from the Children's Court had gone into effect on July 1, 1915.

Hoyt was also president of the Big Brothers movement from 1911-1925, and of the Boy Scouts in the Bronx and Manhattan. After his retirement from the bench he became Federal alcohol administrator in 1935.
