Rep. Candice Miller Selected as Chair of the Committee on House Administration

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following statement upon being appointed the new Chairman of the Committee on House Administration.  

Chairman Miller said: “I am both humbled and honored by the confidence Speaker Boehner has shown in me to take on the Chairmanship of the Committee on House Administration.  This committee has the responsibility to ensure that the House runs in an effective and efficient manner which is vital as we work to meet the many challenges facing this great nation.  Most importantly, this committee has jurisdiction over the federal election process and I am absolutely committed to making certain that we enact rules to ensure this nation continues to have open, free and fair elections.

“My past record and experience as Chief Elections Officer during my time as Michigan’s Secretary of State will assist me in accomplishing the many challenges set before us and ensuring that we effectively lead in the area of elections as that is the foundation for our democracy.  This is a challenge that I am eager to take up and ready to get to work on day one.”

In Speaker John Boehner’s announcement of Miller’s appointment, the Speaker said:
“From ensuring the House runs efficiently and smoothly, to making Congress more open and accessible, Candice has a big job ahead as chairman of the House Administration Committee. In her new post, Candice will provide the leadership needed to keep operating costs down, save taxpayer dollars, and help lawmakers use new technology to better engage with their constituents. And her experience as Michigan Secretary of State will be invaluable given the committee’s oversight of campaign finance and election laws.

“Having helped implement new legislative data standards, approved the use of new low-cost digital tools for Members of Congress, and more, the House Administration Committee has been at the forefront of many of our open government initiatives. I know we’ll continue to make big advances with Candice at the helm.”

Representative Miller’s career in public service reflects a long history of efficiency and effectiveness – from her early roots on the Harrison Township Board of Trustees to her current responsibilities representing Michigan’s 10th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Miller serves on the House Homeland Security Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.  She is also a member of the Majority Deputy Whip Team. 

Prior to her election to Congress, Miller became known for her record on effective and cost efficient government.  Miller was first elected as Harrison Township Board of Trustees in 1979; in 1980, she served as Harrison Township Supervisor; and in 1992, she was elected Macomb County Treasurer. In 1994, Miller was elected and served two terms as Michigan’s Secretary of State.  As Secretary of State, Miller’s reforms enhanced Michigan’s elections system and she implemented a statewide uniform voting system.  The Ford – Carter National Commission on Federal Election Reform cited Miller’s Michigan Qualified Voter File as a national model for how to administer free, fair, and open elections.

Note: The Committee on House Administration was established in 1947 and is charged with the oversight of federal elections and the day-to-day operations of the House of Representatives.
