This month the Music Division is excited to sponsor a special film series called Celebrating the Oscars at the Nation’s Library, curated by Music Reference Specialist James Wintle. Every Wednesday evening for the next four weeks, the public is welcome and encouraged to join us for screenings of the following Oscar-winning films:
March 9, 7:00pm
The Heiress (1949) Directed by William Wyler
Best Dramatic Score: Aaron Copland
March 16, 7:00pm
On the Waterfront (1954) Directed by Elia Kazan
Nominated for Best Dramatic Score: Leonard Bernstein
March 23, 7:00pm
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) Directed by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley
Best Original Score: Erich Korngold
March 30, 7:00pm
Elmer Gantry (1960) Directed by Richard Brooks
Nominated for Best Dramatic Score: André Previn
You can read more information about the film series here. James will give a brief introduction to each film and discuss how the scores fit into the Music Division’s collections (which, you may be surprised to know, feature quite strong holdings in film scores!). Whether you remember seeing these movies in the theater or have only heard the titles in passing, this film series promises to be a treat for all.
