The Gazette: Lamborn: Release a few bin Laden photos for "closure"

By John Schroyer

U.S. Rep. Doug Lambornwas among a select few members of Congress to have seen the photos of Osama bin Laden’s corpse on Thursday.

Lamborn, a Colorado Springs Republican, sits on the House Armed Services Committee, which was invited Tuesday by the CIA to view the photographs. To date, President Barack Obama has declined to release the photos to the public, citing national security concerns.

There were six photos, said Lamborn, including one just after he had been killed, two when his body was being examined on a military ship, and several from the funeral preparation before bin Laden was buried at sea. One showed him carefully wrapped in a white shroud.

“When I looked at these photos, it gave me a sense of finality and closure. You can hear about it, you can read about it, but seeing it with your own eyes is a different level of experience,” Lamborn said.

The congressman said releasing a few of the photos would give the American public the same sense of closure, and would also put to rest any question that it was indeed bin Laden who was killed.

“There’s no doubt. The CIA put side by side photos of him when he was living and when he was killed. You could tell it was the same individual,” said Lamborn.

Lambornalso said he’s glad bin Laden won’t face an American jury.

“I would not have had confidence in the ability of (U.S. Attorney General) Eric Holder to try him in court, whether in a military tribunal or worse, in a civilian court,” said Lamborn. “It would be a nightmare if he was tried in New York City.”
