ENERGY

 

State Energy Program

Funding: $3.1 billion; New Jersey will receive $73.6 million

Administrator: State of New Jersey, counties and municipalities      

Description: Funding will be available for rebates to consumers for home energy audits or other energy saving improvements; development of renewable energy projects for clean electricity generation and alternative fuels; promotion of Energy Star products; efficiency upgrades for state and local government buildings; and other innovative state efforts to help save families money on their energy bills.  A portion of the funds will go to counties and municipalities and another portion will go to the State.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Funding: $5 billion; New Jersey will receive $118.8 million

Administrator: State of New Jersey, Department of Community Affairs

Description: Funds will be provided to local Weatherization Assistance Community Action Programs to help provide income-qualified residents with services that reduce household energy use and costs by improving the energy efficiency of their homes while ensuring their health and safety.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant

Funding: $3.2 billion;New Jersey will receive $73 million

Administrator: State of New Jersey, counties and cities and the U.S. Department of Energy

Description: The funding will be used to reduce total energy use, cut fossil fuel emissions, and improve energy efficiency in vehicle fleets and facilities.  Larger counties and municipalities will receive funding directly from the Department of Energy; funds for small counties and municipalities will go through the State.  The State will also receive a portion of the funds for its direct use.

In addition, there is $400 million in competitive grant funding available directly from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Biomass Program

Funding: $800 million

Description: For research, development and demonstration for converting biomass resources to biofuels.

Description: Research, development and demonstration efforts that emphasize the advancement of enhanced geothermal systems.

Advanced Battery Manufacturing

Funding: $2 billion

Administrator: U.S. Department of Energy

Description: For the manufacturing of advanced batteries and components; and to provide facility funding to manufacturers of advanced battery systems and vehicle batteries that are produced in the United States, including advanced lithium ion batteries, hybrid electrical systems, component manufacturers, and software designers.

Alternative Fueled Vehicle Pilot Grant Program

Funding: $300 million

Administrator: U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Clean Cities Program 

Description: May be used for the acquisition of alternative fueled vehicles, fuel cell vehicles or hybrid vehicles, including buses for public transportation and ground support vehicles at public airports. The installation or acquisition of infrastructure necessary to directly support an alternative fueled vehicle, fuel cell vehicle, or hybrid vehicle project funded by the grant is also eligible.

Transportation Electrification

Funding: $400 million

Administrator: U.S. Department of Energy

Description: Funds will go to a grant program for qualified electric transportation projects that reduce emissions, including electrification of vehicles, truck stop electrification, airport ground support equipment and cargo handling equipment.

Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program and Energy Star

Funding: $300 million

Administrator: Energy Star in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy  

Description: Approximately 15 states have appliance rebate programs currently operating to incentivize the purchase of energy efficient appliances. This program would add federal funds to increase the effectiveness of these programs and to encourage the remaining states to adopt similar programs. This will speed the rollout of appliances that will be able to take advantage of smart meters and spur consumer purchases of smart and energy-efficient appliances.

Smart Grid Investment Program

Funding: $4.5 billion

Administrator: U.S. Department of Energy

Description: Funds will go for research and development, pilot projects and federal matching funds for the Smart Grid Investment Program to modernize the electric grid.

Fossil Enery Research and Development

Funding: $3.4 billion

Administrator: U.S. Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy

Description: Initiatives will focus on research, development and deployment of technologies to use coal more cleanly and efficiently. Investments will go toward finding and testing new ways to produce energy from coal - such as gasification - and improving techniques to clean or capture and store the emissions from coal-fired power plants.

Office of Science

Funding: $1.6 billion

Administrator: U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science

Description: The Office of Science manages fundamental research programs in basic energy sciences, biological and environmental sciences, and computational science. Colleges and universities, non-profit organizations, for-profit commercial organizations, state and local governments, and unaffiliated individuals may submit grant applications.

Advanced Research Projects (ARPA - E)

Funding: $400 million

Administrator: U.S. Department of Energy

Description: Funds will go to institutions of higher education, companies, research foundations, trade and industry research collaborations, or consortia of such entities, which may include federally-funded research and development centers in order to support high-risk, high-payoff research to accelerate the innovation cycle for both traditional and alternative energy sources and energy.
