  1. As a father of six and a grandfather of eight, I can only imagine the great pain of the parents and families who tragically lost loved ones in last month’s heinous acts of violence in Newtown, Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers continue... to be with the families of the victims. Tragedies like these, however, should never be used as an excuse to call for or take unilateral actions curtailing our basic freedoms. These actions not only fail to honor the memory of the victims, but also fail to provide actual safeguards against future tragedies.

Safe and responsible gun ownership is part of our Constitution and has greatly contributed to individual and public safety. To attack law-abiding gun owners is a superficial and unconstitutional approach to addressing the tragedies of mass shootings in our nation.

  2. I know that in this turbulent economy, people are working harder for less take home pay. Many Central Floridians do not expect a raise this year and have not received one for quite some time.

Today, I am announcing that I voluntarily cut my own pay and returned the difference to the U.S. Treasury to help pay down the debt. Every dollar counts, and getting our fiscal house in order starts with a Congress that lives within its means. Rolling back my salary to 2008 levels is a small example of savings that is possible and necessary.

  3. The U.S. House of Representatives read the U.S. Constitution aloud this morning to demonstrate the commitment of the 113th Congress to secure for future generations a constitutional government that is subject to the consent of the governed and protects every American’s God-given right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

  6. Although the December unemployment report shows modest job creation, we simply cannot accept that 7.8% unemployment and sluggish economic growth are the new normal. Bold action is long overdue to address the true drivers of our debt, provid...e needed certainty in the marketplace and free our nation from this cycle of too much debt and too few jobs.

The 113th Congress offers that opportunity for bold action, and I call on my colleagues to respond with a renewed commitment to tackling the big problems facing our economy. The House stands ready to build on its job creation efforts from last Congress. It is my hope that the Senate and President will join us in recognizing the urgency with which we must act on behalf of all Americans.

  7. Today, I am pleased to announce I will return to the House Rules Committee for the 113th Congress. With wide-sweeping jurisdiction and the responsibility of overseeing the content, as well as the terms and conditions of consideration, of ne...arly every bill that comes to the House floor, the Rules Committee allows me to represent Central Floridians’ interests across many policy areas at critical points in the formulation of bills. The Rules Committee also gives me an avenue to work towards opening up the process here in Washington to ensure transparency and accountability. I look forward to working with Chairman Pete Sessions and my Rules Committee colleagues over the coming term.See More
  8. I was humbled to step onto the floor of the House of Representatives this afternoon, raise my right hand and be sworn in as the U.S. Representative for the people of Florida's 10th Congressional District. Serving you in the House of Representatives is a solemn responsibility. I pledge that my office will always be open, accessible and accountable, and I look forward to hearing from you while I work during the 113th Congress to restore economic growth and create jobs in our community through collaborative, principled solutions.
  9. This is not the solution America needs. This is simply Washington doing what Washington does best—maintaining the status quo. Passage of this bill does not solve the true fiscal cliff that we face. Americans need and deserve a bolder plan t...hat addresses the real drivers of our debt, which are crippling the next generation. Forcing higher taxes on Americans, while not seriously tackling Washington’s runaway spending, will not turn our economy around, create jobs or solve our debt crisis. It also does not represent the balanced approach promised by President Obama to the American people.
