Lamborn Seeks to Improve Public Awareness of Gun Rights

Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) has introduced a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives calling on Congress to recognize the anniversary of the landmark Heller gun rights decision.

H.R. 677 recognizes June 26, 2012 as the fourth anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court case of District of Columbia v. Heller. The Supreme Court ruled in that case that a decades-old law banning individuals from owning handguns in Washington, D.C. was unconstitutional. It was the first modern Supreme Court decision to find a law violated the fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms. At its core, the D.C. v. Heller found the Second Amendment is an individual right tied to the natural rights of self-defense.

“This case makes crystal clear the right to own a firearm applies to individuals and not just to organized militias. For decades, opponents of our Second Amendment rights have tried to chip away at this fundamental right. If we are to remain a free people, we must be vigilant and knowledgeable about ongoing attempts to undermine our rights.  My resolution would help do that by increasing public awareness of this landmark case.”– Doug Lamborn (CO-05)
