  1. I’m honored to begin my fourth term as the Congressman from eastern Connecticut today. I look forward to working with our new Senator Chris Murphy, Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty and a bipartisan coalition from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey to quickly pass a Sandy relief package, so people impacted by the storm can continue their recovery. We have already waited far too long.

  4. Here is my floor speech from today about the House GOP's failure to act on the Sandy relief bill.

"After Sandy, first responders acted--police, fire fighters--the governors of states affected and local and municipal officials acted. In the weeks since then, the Senate acted. The only place that hasn't acted is the House of Representatives. That is unacceptable."
  5. The House GOP's decision in the middle of the night to skip a critical vote on Hurricane Sandy relief kills any help for Connecticut, New Jersey and New York this Congress. The Senate acted, and the House should too. It will take months to reset a vote on the floor--months of delay we can't afford.
  6. Tonight, I voted for a bipartisan, but certainly not perfect, compromise that accomplishes my highest priority: preventing the country from falling off the fiscal cliff--a fate the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office and economists of every stripe confirmed would have stifled growth and risked recession. Additionally, the bill permanently protects middle-class families from an income tax incr...ease, expands the Child Tax Credit and continues marriage penalty relief.

Having spent months calling for a big, balanced approach to prevent sequestration, I am pleased that across-the-board cuts have been postponed for the time being, but it is only a temporary reprieve. Now it is time for people of good faith to come together, show Congress can work, and restore the American people's faith in their government.

  7. As design work continues on the Ohio class replacement and construction on two Virginia class submarines moves forward, in an editorial today The Day said: "the vitality of Electric Boat shines brightly as a beacon of hope in the region's choppy economic seas."
  8. Still waiting for Speaker Boehner's 48-hour notice to resume work on the fiscal cliff. President Obama is already on his way back to DC. The Senate is too. Where is the Speaker!?
  9. Just left the Christmas community dinner at Rein's Deli in Vernon. Hockanum Valley Community Council is feeding 300-plus turkey dinners with all the trimmings. Great work by Dave Engleson and his team of volunteers. Thanks to Steve Kassman, owner of Rein's, who donates use of his New York-style deli for this great cause. From my family to yours, merry Christmas to all.
  10. I’ll be on MSNBC this morning at 11 to talk about the Newtown tragedy and gun violence in America.
  11. I was on Politics Nation yesterday to discuss the Newtown tragedy, and what we must do to prevent another incident like this in the future. We are failing the test of protecting our children.
  12. Senator Daniel Inouye’s death is a tremendous loss not just for Hawaii and the United States Senate, but for the State of Connecticut as well. A war hero, Medal of Honor recipient and tireless champion of veterans and our men and women in u...niform, Senator Inouye led the effort to save the Seawolf and in 2007 traveled to Connecticut, advocating strongly for doubled submarine production in the state. His efforts earned him the nickname "Connecticut’s third senator."

Senator Inouye’s life was one of superlatives and firsts, but there is no bigger compliment in Washington than the one he earned over his lifetime of service: he was always a man of his word.

  13. Just left the moving memorial service at Newtown High School. We must strive to be a better nation, and never forget those innocent souls.
  14. Today’s shooting in Newtown is an horrific and senseless tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, families, and the Sandy Hook Elementary School community. The people of Connecticut stand ready to provide help and support to all those affected.
  15. Over the past two years, my office has helped eastern Connecticut taxpayers recover more than $2.6 million from the federal government, including veterans benefits, Social Security checks and tax refunds. Here are three of their stories:
  16. I’ll be on MSNBC’s Martin Bashir Show at 4:45 this afternoon. We’ll be talking about the fiscal cliff and why cuts to Social Security and Medicare should not be part of any deal. Hope you can tune in!
  17. ICYMI: I was on The Real Story on Fox CT on Sunday talking about the fiscal cliff and why preventing sequestration will protect eastern Connecticut jobs. Here’s the video:
  18. Good news that the Senate followed the House yesterday in supporting legislation to ensure two-subs-per-year production next year. The provision I secured in the House—which was supported by the bipartisan Shipbuilding Cacus—has massive economic benefits that will ripple, up and down the supply chain, across Connecticut.
