Hamilton County to receive road, drainage improvements

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The citizens of Hamilton County will avoid potential flood disasters as the recipient of a $350,000 grant, Congressman John Carter (TX-31) announced Thursday.

The Texas Office of Rural Community Affairs awarded the $350,000 Disaster Relief Fund grant to the county to improve county roads, bridges and drainage facilities to better handle heavy rainfall.

"I’m pleased that this money will help the citizens of Hamilton County avoid potentially disastrous flood and will provide them with the latest in bridge and drainage improvements," Carter said.

The grant was made available from the Community Development Block Grant Program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Each year, the HUD provides federal funds directly to states, which, in turn, provide the funds to small, rural counties that have less than 200,000 citizens. Hamilton County had about 8,100 citizens in 2008, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

"Often times, rural areas miss out on funding, but it’s important that we afford them the tools to effectively maintain their communities," Carter said.

In fiscal year 2009, the Texas Department of Rural Affairs received more than $73 million from HUD for distribution.

All grants are expected to benefit at least 51 percent of the area’s low- to moderate-income persons.
