FRANKFORT, Ind. (WLFI) - The Salutatorian for Frankfort Community High School's 2012 Class gave a compelling speech at graduation Saturday. Just a few days ago, it was unknown if that Salutatorian, Elizabeth Olivas, would even make it back in time for graduation. 

"When I saw, read, and heard all the support from everyone, I cried tears of pure happiness and I was filled with more hope," said Olivas during her speech. 

Wishing and hoping turned into reality for Homecoming queen and athlete Elizabeth Olivas. Just a few days ago, Olivas was being detained in Mexico. She was born there but has lived in the United States since she was four years old. She was required to return to Mexico to update her visa. However, she missed the deadline by one day and has been in Mexico for seven weeks. Betty, as friends and family call her, said her case is just one of many. 

"I know my issue is a strong issue, not just for me but for everybody who was in the same case as I was but I want them to know that they should never give up," said Olivas in a press conference. 

Making it home in time for Saturday's graduation wasn't easy. Due to hard work from her attorney and politicians, the U.S. State Department issued her a waiver. Helping with that waiver, was Frankfort Mayor Chris McBarnes. 

"As soon as we heard that Miss Olivas was stranded in Mexico, immediately, as the leader of this community, I knew that we needed to step up and reach out to our federal leaders. Congressman Rokita, Congressman Pence, Senator Lugar, and Senator Coats all had a hand in bringing her back," said McBarnes. 

Tears were shed in Case Arena as Elizabeth gave her Salutatorian speech to her fellow classmates. In that speech, she encouraged them to follow their dreams just like she has. Olivas also mentioned her two best friends. Trish Langkop was one of them. She said it's nice to have Olivas back for graduation because they missed track season and prom together. 

"The whole senior year was pretty hard without her, the last couple big events," said Langkop. 

Before Olivas closed the door on her high school years, she left her classmates with one more piece of advice. 

"Battle and fight until you win," said Olivas. 

Olivas has been accepted to several colleges but hasn't decided where she will be headed in the fall. She said right now, her focus is pursuing a career in nursing.
