The Georgia State University Marching Band was invited Tuesday to march in President Barack Obama’s second Inaugural Parade in January.

The 140 member band, which is under the direction of Chester Phillips, is the only Georgia group on the initial list of parade participants released Tuesday by the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

The Georgia State band is scheduled to leave Atlanta for Washington on Jan. 18, march in the parade on Jan. 21 and return home the following day.

More than 2,800 groups submitted requests to march in the parade prior to the November application deadline. The first invitations went out Tuesday to 24 organizations. Additional participants will be announced later.

The South Cobb High School Marching Band from Austell marched in Obama’s first inaugural parade in 2009.
