The Strokes release new single 'One Way Trigger': Hear it here

the-strokes

We’re not going to lie: when we first hit play, we thought we’d accidentally clicked on the wrong song.

“One Way Trigger,” the Strokes’ first new work since 2011′s Angles, starts off with lead singer Julian Casablancas sounding … not quite like his usual self. The sly synths and jumpy guitars were there, but the falsetto had us fooled, more evocative of, say, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke than the famously ennui-plagued Strokesman.

But by the propulsive single’s second verse, Casablancas gives himself away, and everything makes sense again: this is not only a Strokes song, but a damn good one.

Give the track a listen below:

Watch Jimmy Cliff perform 'The Harder They Come' on 'Guitar Center Sessions' - EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Last year, reggae icon Jimmy Cliff made a stunning return to music in the form of Rebirth, a lively collection of tunes produced by Rancid’s Tim Armstrong that cut right to the heart of what the island sound is all about.

Cliff’s victory lap—which included a team-up with Bruce Springsteen at SXSW and a Grammy nomination—continues this Friday, January 25, when Cliff performs on the TV show Guitar Center Sessions.

The show sets up stars in the Guitar Center in Hollywood, and so far this season has delivered dynamic sets from the likes of Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh and the reconstituted Ben Folds Five.

Check out the exclusive premiere of Cliff’s Guitar Center Sessions performance of the classic track “The Harder They Come” below.  READ FULL STORY »

Justin Timberlake gets his style on in official 'Suit and Tie' lyric video: Watch here

The black-and-white lyric video for Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” is so well produced, with so many nifty design elements, that it’s hard to believe it’s not the outright actual music video.

Like the song itself, the clip is centered around sartorial affairs, with the ever-dapper JT making his way through L.A. and slipping into an improbably more elegant outfit. The kid cleans up nice!

Watch Timberlake fix up, look sharp in the video below:

Black Keys sue casino owner over song

The Black Keys are remaining vigilant when it comes to sound-a-like songs.

The Nashville duo is suing Pinnacle Entertainment in New York federal court. Drummer Patrick Carney and singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach say the casino owner commissioned a song that sounds like their hit “Howlin’ For You” for a commercial advertising two of its Louisiana properties. They are asking a judge for an injunction and compensation.

“The experts confirmed that this was copyright infringement,” the band said in a statement Wednesday to The Associated Press.

The Keys recently settled lawsuits against Pizza Hut and Home Depot over similar charges of copying the songs “Lonely Boy” and “Gold on the Ceiling.” Terms of those settlements were not released.

The Keys are up for five trophies at next month’s Grammy Awards and Auerbach also has been nominated for producer of the year.

Seven things to know about 'Thrift Shop' hitmakers Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

Macklemore-and-Ryan-Lewis.jpg

Today, Seattle duo Macklemore (pictured, right) and Ryan Lewis (left), hit number one on Billboard‘s Hot 100 with their college-anthem-turned-mainstream-smash “Thrift Shop,” unseating Bruno Mars’ “Locked out of Heaven,” which had held the pole position for six weeks.

When the rapper/producer pair’s independently produced album The Heist opened at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 last October, many music fans above the age of 21 were left wondering who Macklemore and Ryan Lewis even were. (Not us, of course. We chatted with Macklemore back in August.) But the monumental success of “Thrift Shop” has given them millions of listeners outside the college bubble.

EW recently chatted with the pair about their unexpected success, impressing Ellen DeGeneres, repping their hometown of Seattle, and how to thrift like pros: READ FULL STORY »

Last night, the heavily bloggerized Brooklyn-via-Tacoma duo Widowspeak celebrated the release of their second album, Almanac, with a sold-out show at the Mercury Lounge.

And while the record has been streaming on NPR and NME for some time now, this marked the first time they’ve played most of their new material live; expectations were high.

Justin Timberlake’s ‘Suit & Tie’ breaks radio and chart records

Just in case anyone was wondering, Justin Timberlake is still a bona fide pop star.

Timberlake’s new single, “Suit & Tie,” was released with a maximum amount of drama (countdown clocks! YouTube manifestos!) and, as it turns out, a maximum amount of sales: it notched the highest first-week total radio plays in the 20-year history of Billboard’s Pop Songs chart.

“Suit & Tie” places Timberlake’s falsetto front and center, next to a decent-if-sappy verse from Jay-Z, all backed by spangly Timbaland production. (Can a song shimmer and honk at the same time?)

It racked up 6,045 plays between Jan. 14 and 20, landing at No. 14 on the chart and breaking two records: it’s the highest debut for a male artist (beating out Jon Secada’s “If You Go” from 1994, if you can believe it) and it tops Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” in first-week plays by almost 2,000 spins.

And all of this for a track that very few people even knew Timberlake was recording.

JT’s movie career thus far has been fairly hit and miss, so this musical detour seems as much strategic as spontaneous. Meanwhile, FutureSex/Love Sounds fans — out in the cold since 2006 — have just months to go until the release of The 20/20 Experience.

Other good news for Timberfans? He will be performing at DirecTV’s Super Saturday Night during Super Bowl weekend — his first concert in almost five years.

For the occasion, might we suggest more horns?

Ted Nugent calls Obama 'an evil, dangerous man who hates America'

Ted Nugent is at it again.

The bear-killing rocker is once again speaking out against President Obama via a recent interview with (wait for it) Guns.com, and his language is as colorful as ever. Nugent, who had to meet with the Secret Service last year after he basically threatened to harm Obama, is now accusing the second-term president of being a communist sympathizer, among other things.

So many other things: “He is an evil, dangerous man who hates America and hates freedom, and we need to fix this as soon as possible,” Nugent said while at a gun trade show in Las Vegas.

Much of Nugent’s concern stems from the president’s recent push for tighter gun laws, though, really, Nugent can find concern almost anywhere.

“I’m part of a very great experiment in self-government where we the people determine our own pursuit of happiness and our own individual freedom and liberty, not to be confused with the Barack Obama gang who believes in we the sheeple and actually is attempting to re-implement the tyranny of King George that we escaped from in 1776,” the musician said. “If you want another Concord Bridge, I got some buddies,” he added, because why not.
