New Jaguars GM David Caldwell confirmed on Thursday that the team will have an open quarterback competition this offseason and through training camp.

"We plan to address the quarterback situation, obviously," Caldwell said. "Blaine [Gabbert] is the second-youngest quarterback in the NFL, but we're going to have open competition. Whether it's through draft or through free agency, we'll bring in some more people to compete... We're going to let the best player win." This is just confirmation that the plans have not changed since now ex-head coach Mike Mularkey said the same thing in late November. Gabbert is signed through 2014 while Chad Henne is under contract for one more season.

Bears signed TE Fendi Onobun to a reserve/future contract.

Onobun has bounced all over the league after being a sixth-round pick of the Rams in 2010. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound tight end played four years of basketball at the University of Arizona before joining the Houston Cougars football team in 2009. Onobun brings along his athleticism but has just two career catches.

Fox Sports Southwest confirms the Cowboys are "close" to hiring Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator.

Kiffin spent the day at Valley Ranch, meeting with owner Jerry Jones and staff. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Tampa 2 master will not force his cover 2 scheme on press corners Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne. According to ex-Bucs LB Derrick Brooks, Kiffin "wants to earn his reputation back" after his Tampa defense fell apart once he announced he was leaving back in 2008. "I know that bothers him," said Brooks. "He is motivated in that sense."

Marshawn Lynch (foot) missed practice again on Thursday.

If it was any other player but Lynch, we would be concerned about his status for Sunday's game. The Seahawks have expressed no doubt over Lynch's status, and he's been absent or limited for Thursday practices a half-dozen times this season. Lynch has rushed for 85+ yards in 23 of his past 26 games.

The Canton Repository reports the Browns want to wrap up their coaching search by Sunday night.

The Repository's belief is that the final decision will come down ex-Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt versus Bengals DC Mike Zimmer, with Colts OC Bruce Arians "still in the picture." Zimmer is expected to have a second interview on Friday. Per the Plain Dealer, the Browns "still really like" OC Rob Chudzinski as well. The Repository also reports that former Chiefs director of pro personnel Ray Farmer will interview for the GM position on Friday, and NFL Network's Michael Lombardi "is in the Browns' fold, with only his title to be determined." Farmer and Lombardi worked together with the Eagles in the late 1990s.

Cardinals DC Ray Horton has reportedly reached out to ex-Chargers coach Norv Turner to gauge his interest in running Horton's offense in the event of a head-coaching opportunity.

It's believed that Turner wants to stay out west. Horton finished his playing career with the Cowboys in the early '90s when Turner was running a juggernaut offense for the Super Bowl champs. He also coached under Turner with the Redskins in the mid-90s. Bringing in Turner would give Horton a distinct advantage in ascending to the head-coaching job in Arizona.

The Jaguars have reportedly requested permission to interview Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer for their head-coaching vacancy.

Schottenheimer interviewed with former Jags GM Gene Smith last January before Mike Mularkey was chosen. He has a connection to new GM David Caldwell through Rams GM Les Snead, as the two execs worked together in the Falcons front office for years. Schottenheimer would seem to be an uninspired choice. His offenses in New York and St. Louis have been unimaginative. One person who worked with Schottenheimer did tell NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that he would be a better head coach than coordinator.

Texans DC Wade Phillips insists DL J.J. Watt's 2012 season was the "absolute best" of any defensive lineman in NFL history.

Phillips has been a defensive line coach, coordinator, or head coach in the NFL since 1976. He will get no argument from us. In addition to his league-lead 20.5 sacks, Watt also obliterated the unofficial records for batted passes (16) and "defeats" in the run game (56). He also led the league in tackles for loss (22), had 76 QB disruptions, and posted a defensive stop on 17.2 percent of his snaps. Watt became the first player to earn a grade of +100.0 in Pro Football Focus' ratings. As dominant as Von Miller and Geno Atkins were in 2012, Watt is the easy choice for defensive player of the year.
