  1. Sec. Ken Salazar announced he's stepping down from the Department of the Interior today. We didn't always see eye to eye, but I appreciated his many trips to Alaska to hear from Alaskans about development and federal lands. I wish him well.

      Articles of Impeachment Against Barack Hussein Obama – Filed by Citizen Alexander Emric Jones, January 15, 2013. - He has clearly communicated his intent to eviscerate the second amendment rights of American citizens by pursuing executive orders to curtail the right to keep and bear arms without congressional authorization and in violation of the second amendment. Below, Congressman Stockman has pledged to move for impeachment against Obama. I am standing up against Obama right beside him, will you? “The President’s actions are an existential threat to this nation,” reads a statement by Rep. Steve Stockman. “The right of the people to keep and bear arms is what has kept this nation free and secure for over 200 years. The very purpose of the Second Amendment is to stop the government from disallowing people the means to defend themselves against tyranny. Any proposal to abuse executive power and infringe upon gun rights must be repelled with the stiffest legislative force possible.” - He has aided America’s enemies, violating his oath, by sending funds to insurgents in Syria who are being commanded by Al-Qaeda terrorists. - He has violated federal law by overseeing a cover-up surrounding Operation Fast and Furious, the transfer of guns to Mexican drug cartels direct from the federal government. - He has lied to the American people by overseeing a cover-up of the Benghazi attack which directly led to the deaths of four American citizens. The cover-up has been called “Obama’s Watergate,” yet four months after the incident, no one in the administration has been held accountable. - He has brazenly undermined the power of Congress by insisting his authority came from the United Nations Security Council prior to the attack on Libya and that Congressional approval was not necessary. “I don’t even have to get to the Constitutional question,” said Obama. This is an act that “constitutes an impeachable high crime and misdemeanor under article II, section 4 of the Constitution,” according to Congressman Walter Jones. - He has ignored Congressional rejection of the cybersecurity bill and instead indicated he will pursue an unconstitutional executive order. - He has signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act which includes provisions that permit the abduction and military detention without trial of U.S. citizens, violating Habeas Corpus. Despite Obama claiming he would not use the provisions to incarcerate U.S. citizens, it was his administration that specifically demanded these powers be included in the final NDAA bill. - He has enacted universal health care mandates that force Americans to buy health insurance, a clear violation of the Constitution in exceeding congressional power to regulate interstate commerce. Obama has also handed outpreferential waivers to corporations friendly to his administration. - He has declared war on America’s coal industry by promising to bankrupt any company that attempts to build a new coal plant while using unconstitutional EPA regulations to strangle competition, ensuring Americans see their energy costs rise year after year. - He has violated the Constitution’s Takings and Due Process Clauses when he bullied the secured creditors of automaker Chrysler into accepting 30 cents on the dollar while politically connected labor unions and preferential others received better deals. - He has violated Article II of the Constitution by using signing statements as part of his executive usurpation of power. “I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment.” Rep. Steve Stockman, Texas. For these, and other offenses which constitute high crimes and misdemeanors, including perjury of oath, abuse of authority, bribery, intimidation, misuse of assets, failure to supervise, dereliction of duty, conduct unbecoming and refusal to obey a lawful order, we call for the immediate impeachment of Barack H. Obama.

    • I respectfully submit my view of the President's proposal on stricter gun laws. I have had enough of the mass killings in our country, and our state. This is madness. Please help stop the madness by supporting gun regulations outlined by the President.

      The status issue of Puerto Rico is no longer the prerogative of political parties, is now a HUMAN and CIVIL RIGHTS movement. Before the voting process began, all stakeholders (foreign banks, corporations, parties, etc ...) financed campaigns and by all means tried to stop it; but the process was held with an overwhelming result; NO MORE DISCRIMINATION, SEGREGATION and ideological RACISM against the fellow american citizens in PR . NO MORE APARTHEID. Now it's up to all of us, the people, to take the lead and bring order to respect our mandate. It begins with the 1st Amendment (WE THE PEOPLE); no one forget that !

  3. Sorry to report the House stripped money for Alaska and other states out of the natural disaster funding bill today. The pared-down version only funded relief for Hurricane Sandy victims. No disrespect to anyone who was impacted by that horrible storm, but we have families struggling to have enough to eat this winter due to the chinook failure and they need help too. I'll keep fighting to see victims of federally and state-declared disasters get the help they deserve.

  9. Thanks to Wasilla High School senior Sabrina Holm, who made me this kuspuk! Sabrina is an Alaska Native student excelling in the school's IEA program - she's also a Certified Nursing Assistant. (Not to mention a great seamstress.) It was a pleasure to get to meet with her and her classmates in Wasilla yesterday.

  10. Due to such a positive response and high volume of submissions, moving forward we can only add three photos per entrant to the album.

    Thanks to everyone for sharing their photos and keep 'em coming.
  11. Submit your entry to be considered for the top spot on my Facebook page by emailing photos to coverphoto@begich.senate.gov. Entries must include the name of the photographer, location (I'm counting on Alaska!) of the photograph, and a brief description. All submissions must be the entrant’s own work. NOTE: if you choose to submit a photo that is not your own but meaningful to you, it will still be posted in the album, just not considered as a finalist.

    Photo: "I chose this photo because of the way the morning fog is rolling over the hills and the float plane is in the background. I titled this one 'Foggy Hills'." - Timothy Koentopp, Craig, AK
    Photo: "I chose this photo because of the contrasting colors and the cool beams of light. If you look closely, there is a boat in the middle of the light. I titled this one "Following The Light", because of the fact that in Southeast Alaska seeing light is very rare. Usually when the sun comes out around here, the entire town shuts down to take advantage of it." - Timothy Koentopp, Craig, AK
    Photo: I took this photo off of my deck in Craig, AK. I thought this photo turned out great because of the way the low level sun hit the side of the boat and the splash from the birds leaving the buoy. I titled this one "Home Before Dark". Tim Koentopp, Craig, AK

  14. This month, Sen. Mark Begich is holding a Facebook cover photo contest with the theme “Show Me Your Alaska,” encouraging any and all Alaskan photographers (amateur, professional, or anyone with a camera) to show their Alaska pride by submit...
  15. Proud to announce my newest committee assignment on the Appropriations Committee. It’s a great place to push for serious spending cuts, especially when we’re at such a critical point with the national deficit. I’ll work to make smart cuts that address our national challenges while working with Sen. Lisa Murkowski to represent Alaska’s interests and protect strategic resources like Eielson Air Force Base.
  16. Thanks to the American Red Cross of Alaska and the first responders from the Anchorage Police Department and Anchorage Fire Department who responded yesterday to the apartment fire in Midtown - sounds like it could have turned out a lot worse without their bravery and commitment. You make Alaska great!
    Our volunteers are AWESOME! Thank you to everyone who was on-scene at the Eureka fire and set up a shelter for those displaced!

  17. Just learned Alaska will be getting its first Honor Flight Network chapter! If you're not familiar with this charity, it raises money to send military veterans to visit war memorials in Washington, D.C. Here's some info on the good work HFN does.
  18. Alaskans: It is time to let the FDA know what you think about genetically modified salmon. The public comment period on a draft finding of "no significant impact" to the environment or human health from FRANKENFISH is now open and we need to make sure they know how wrong-headed this finding is. Log your thoughts via this site (look for the green "submit a formal comment" button on the left), and please share this post far and wide! Just say no to Frankenfish!
  19. To all of you who expressed your frustration and disgust at the idea of Congress getting a pay raise, I have good news: The Senate succeeded in killing that notion in our fiscal cliff bill.
  20. Not a moment too soon - the Senate passed a deal tonight that protects the middle class AND includes a rejection of the scheduled automatic pay raises for Congress. It's in the hands of House members now. Happy New Year, Alaska!
  21. New Year's resolutions:
    1. Spend more time with family;
    2. Spend more time with colleagues of different perspectives - political, regional, economic or otherwise - In both the Senate and the House;
    3. Try to avoid cliffs - cuts are needed but we can make them less dramatic if we work together;
    4. No more potato chips - okay, maybe only with lunch but definitely not between meals.
  22. The Homeland Security Committee, of which I'm a member, put together the bipartisan report released today after pushing the administration for answers on the attacks in Benghazi that resulted in the loss of American lives. While it's clear the administration did not take the necessary steps to protect our public servants abroad, we are demanding they implement recommendations to make sure this never happens again.
  23. I'm going to stick around here until this deal is done, but like everyone else in this country, I'm fed up. A deal should have been done days ago. Working families need certainty that their taxes won't go up. There's a way to get this done without cutting benefits to our seniors. Time for our leaders to take some political risk for the sake of our country.
  24. I continue to oppose the President’s executive order to give members of Congress a pay raise. The American people don’t get an automatic pay raise and neither should members of Congress.
  25. The Senate's decision to extend the FISA Amendment's Act today for five years presents some serious concerns about our Constitutional rights,ones that myself and Alaskans fiercely believe we must protect. While it is critical for law enforcement agencies to be able to utilize surveillance tools to protect us from terrorism, a loophole remains in the FISA Act that would allow for unchecked monitoring of American's personal communications. We need a better balance between protecting our safety and constitutional rights
  26. We lost a great American yesterday with the passing of Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf. My prayers are with his family and friends.
  27. Welcome to Lt Governor Brian Schatz who has big shoes to fill replacing the late Sen. Inouye. Glad to have him in the Senate.
