CHCI Fellowships Deadline Extended

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 22, 2013 at 11:59 P.M. ET

CHCI is seeking to offer exceptional Latino college and post-graduates from across the country unparalleled exposure to professional experiences in a vast array of public policy arenas such as education, health, housing, law, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) while participating in CHCI’s nationally acclaimed leadership development training program. Graduate Fellows also have the opportunity to publish a policy paper and develop/execute a policy summit.

Few people possess the inherent commitment to become a public servant. It takes a particular type of human being, selfless and hard-working in nature, to take on such noble yet strenuous responsibility. Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez, born with public service in his blood, is one of those individuals who not only has the natural ability, but the passion and commitment to make impactful and positive change for the community.

As Gonzalez has ended his time in Congress after seven terms, we look back on the man and the many contributions he has made to our nation, to our community, and to the future leaders of America.  Full story here


Vice President Joe Biden Joins CHCI Swearing-In Ceremony to Welcome Hispanic Members of the 113th Congress

January 4, 2013

"It's finally happened," Biden said. "The American people have begun to understand not only the great contributions made, but the awesome potential, future potential of the Hispanic community."

In a historic night for the Hispanic community, CHCI welcomed the Hispanic members of the 113th Congress at a ceremonial swearing-in on Thursday, January 3, 2013, in the East Hall at Union Station in Washington, D.C. Vice President Joe Biden participated in the program and performed the swearing-in for the Hispanic members of the 113th Congress, and newly-elected CHCI and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Rep. Rubén Hinojosa. More than 600 people turned out for the ceremony to hear from Biden, Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis, and Senator Robert Menendez. Roy Nuñez -- November 2012 Scholar

Meet Roy Nuñez. Like many of CHCI’s scholarship recipients, Roy grew up in poverty in predominantly impoverished Latino communities. But that hasn’t stopped him from pursuing a college education that will lead him to his dream. Thanks to his CHCI Scholarship, Roy plans to graduate, and one day, hopes to own a medical clinic that will help his local Hispanic community receive better healthcare so they can lead longer, healthier lives. CHCI Hosts Star-studded Ready to Lead in the City of Angels

Nearly 200 of Los Angeles’ brightest and most motivated students joined CHCI for its Ready to Lead (R2L) Los Angeles event at the Rio Hondo College campus on Saturday, December 8, 2012. Students representing twenty high schools joined us for an intensive day full of learning and preparing for the college process. Welcomed by CHCI President & CEO, Esther Aguilera, and Vice President of Student Services at Rio Hondo College, Henry Gee, participants became eager to learn and ready to lead after listening to parallel messages of overcoming adversity through perseverance and how the pursuit of a higher education could help to release their truest and brightest potentials.

CHCI Announces New 2013-2014 Board Members

Rep. Rubén Hinojosa to Chair Nation’s
Leading Latino Youth Leadership Development Organization

CHCI today announced its new officers and members elected to its board of directors for the 2013-2014 term. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa of the Rio Grande Valley, TX, will chair its board of directors. Hinojosa was unanimously selected to lead CHCI for the next two years as the organization experiences continued growth in carrying out its mission to develop the next generation of Latino leaders.
