Hensarling Statement on Latest Unemployment Report

July 6, 2012

WASHINGTON – House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) issued the following statement today regarding the latest unemployment report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“After 41 straight months of unemployment above 8 percent, the real news today is that the president’s policies are still failing and Americans are still asking, ‘Where are the jobs?’ Instead of focusing on reviving our economy over the past 3 ½ years, President Obama wasted time and trillions of taxpayer dollars on the failed stimulus, Dodd-Frank, and health care laws that have only led to historic debt and a historic real unemployment rate of 14.9 percent.

“Unfortunately, the president seems to think that more spending, more taxes, and more debt are what the nation needs. Mr. President: it didn’t work the first time, and the American people cannot afford a second attempt.

“What I’m hearing from business people – from Fortune 50 CEOs to small business owners – is that Washington red tape is making it harder for them to hire new workers. On top of that list is Obamacare.

“House Republicans will continue our work to turn our economy around for job creators and jobseekers in July by voting to reverse the president’s failed policies. Next week, we will vote once again to repeal the president’s health care law. Later this month, we will move to freeze major federal red tape until unemployment returns to 6 percent and vote to stop the tax hike that is set to hit hardworking families and job creators in January.

“It’s time to end the era of runaway red tape, serial trillion-dollar deficits, and Democrat tax threats that hang like the Sword of Damocles over job creators’ heads. It’s time for the White House and Senate to take up the House Republican Plan for America’s Job Creators and help us restore jobs and opportunity for our country.”
