The mayor announced new legislation to further reduce the smoking rate
  • Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death, killing 7000 people each year
  • In 2011, 28,000 NYC public high school students tried smoking for the first time and 19,000 NYC public high school students under the age of 18 smoked
  • Youth who are frequently exposed to tobacco product displays are 2.5 times more likely to initiate smoking than youth who have less exposure
  • Legislation would make New York City the first City to keep tobacco products out of sight

Mayor announces recycling pilot that brings 30 BigBelly solar powered stations to Times Square
  • Times Square generates approximately 15,300 pounds or 900 bags of garbage a day
  • The Mayor renewed commitment to doubling the city’s recycling rate to 30 percent by 2017

New York City hosts the Armory Show and the Art Show

This week marks the hundredth anniversary of the 1913 Armory Show originally held at the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue and the twenty fifth anniversary of the annual Art Show.
  • It is expected that the Art Show, the Armory Show and other art fairs will generate $54 million in economic activity in New York City.
  • 66,000 people are expected to visit the shows.
  • Around 220,000 New Yorkers work in the City's creative sector; another 40,000 are employed by non-profit cultural organizations.
  • In 2012, New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs was again the nation's largest public funder of the arts.

City consolidates resources reducing operating expenses by $120 million over the next 20 years
  • The City reached an agreement to sell two underutilized City buildings in Lower Manhattan sold for nearly a quarter billion dollars
  • The gross sale prices of both buildings total nearly a quarter-billion dollars: $89 million for the sale of the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank building and $160 million for 346 Broadway.
  • After deducing the costs associated with the project, including moving City agencies out of the buildings, the City will net about $120 million.

Mayor Bloomberg today presented a Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 Preliminary Budget and an updated four-year financial plan. The Mayor outlined a plan that achieves a balanced budget - closing a $2 billion budget gap without tax increases - which is made possible by the City's years of prudent planning and spending restraint.

Mayor Bloomberg Releases 2005 Campaign Accountability Report
Mayor Bloomberg today released his third Campaign Accountability Report, showing that nearly a year and a half after Election Day 2005, 96% of the 100 campaign promises the Mayor made during the 2005 campaign have either been fully implemented or are currently being implemented.
