How do you power a battery without charging it? It’s simple: Just drive and in certain scenarios the lithium-ion battery stores energy to keep charged. That energy is later used to deliver an electric boost to the engine during heavy acceleration or climbing a grade. For the first time, Malibu now includes 10 airbags^† including knee air bags for the driver and front passenger^†. Structural integrity of the vehicle is important during a collision and Malibu provides an extremely strong, stiff body and an ultra-high-strength steel safety cage, along with rollover protection.

Fuel-Saving Technologies

An electronically controlled six-speed transmission allows the engine to operate at a lower rate of speed as compared to transmissions with fewer gears, which results in better fuel economy. Low-mass materials, such as an aluminum hood and carbon-reinforced composite intake manifold, reduce engine workload and contribute to better fuel economy.

The Malibu Eco eAssist uses a 15kW electric-motor generator that takes advantage of the forward motion of the car during slowdown to generate electricity, which is sent to the battery for storage. The stored energy provides the ability to run accessories without burning gasoline when the engine shuts off and when decelerating. It also provides an electric boost of torque when needed for acceleration and passing. This motor generator also boosts the 2.4L engine by 15 horsepower for added fuel efficiency in certain conditions. Malibu Eco achieves an EPA-estimated 37 MPG on the highway.

Responsible Manufacturing

The transmission facilities are landfill-free. These facilities use a process to reuse, recycle or convert to energy all waste created in their daily operations, which conserves resources. Landfill gas supplies 16% of the energy to heat and cool the Toledo, OH, transmission facility, which makes the facility less reliant on fossil fuels

The Detroit-Hamtramck, MI, assembly facility, Spring Hill, TN, engine facility and Toledo, OH, transmission facility feature designated habitat areas certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council, which provide ecological benefits.

End-of-Life Recyclability

After the vehicle’s useful life, 85% of it is recyclable. The majority of its components can be broken down and recycled, which conserves resources and reduces landfill deposits.
