  1. An important reminder: "Despite the ubiquitous presence of 'good guys' with guns, countries like Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia and Venezuela have some of the highest homicide rates in the world. 'A society that is relying on guys with guns to stop violence is a sign of a society where institutions have broken down,' said Rebecca Peters, former director of the International Action Network on Small Arms. "
  2. Look, we can all agree the government should be looking for ways to save money. But refusing to raise the debt ceiling isn't about new spending. It's about paying the final bill for services we already funded. You can't refuse to make mortgage and car payments to "save money." It's not a rational argument, and the president is right to say he won't negotiate over it.
  3. I did an interview earlier today on the prospects for immigration reform and gun safety legislation in the 113th Congress. We simply have to codify the DREAM Act and go further, because we're facing a moral cliff that this country can't afford to go over. At the same time, we can't keep letting 40 percent of gun sales go through without a background check. It's terrible public policy.
  4. I'm having a job fair next Friday in Tucson at 10 a.m. at the El Pueblo Education Center at 101 W. Irvington. Come meet employers looking to hire and talk with our event collaborators at Goodwill of Southern Arizona. We should have a good turnout and plenty of opportunities to learn more about the local job market in 2013. Hope to see you there.
  5. Time for a bit of a mental health break: this is an interesting film about kids in a poor neighborhood in Paraguay who play terrific classical music on instruments made from recycled items.
  6. I voted for the fiscal deal -- it was far from perfect, but we needed to extend unemployment insurance for the millions of Americans still looking for work. We locked in some good provisions and will need to revisit others down the line. One thing we absolutely should be voting on today: Hurricane Sandy rebuilding funds. But the conservative House leadership won't touch it.
  7. Here's a good rundown of where the problems are in Washington right now: "Given conservatives’ habit of walking away even from their own ideas and of rejecting progressive efforts to save money, is it any wonder that liberals suspect them of greater interest in dismantling programs than in making them more efficient? We won’t find genuine common ground on deficits until we resolve this dilemma."
  8. I'll be on Erin Burnett's show on CNN this evening to talk about where we go from here on the nation's fiscal situation. I can tell you what you won't hear: any talk about cutting Social Security or Medicare as some sort of cure-all for upper-income tax cuts we couldn't afford in the first place.
