    About
  1. Tonight, the House considered and passed H.R. 8, by a vote of 257-167, which allows taxes to rise while eliminating spending cuts set to go into law today. I voted "No".

The legislation increased the estate tax, increased the payroll/social security tax on all wage earners, and let some marginal tax rates increase. The bill also increased spending and created trillions in additional debt obligati...ons that will soon be followed by demands for a debt limit increase.

I believe government overspending will not be cured by sending more tax dollars to Washington, DC. I could not support legislation that raised taxes without cutting spending and solving the debt crisis that plagues our nation.

Many of you have shared your thoughts on this legislation and I'm truly appreciative of the ideas and passionate concerns our community has about the fiscal health of our nation. I look forward to working with members of both political parties as we work towards constructive solutions to our challenges in the coming new year.

Today, House members are studying this legislation to determine if it is the right course of actio...n to take for our economy and to address the debt crisis facing our country.

  4. We celebrate Christmas by gathering with the ones we love and sharing in laughter, story telling, family meals, and often times service to others in the spirit of the holiday. If you are traveling to be with family over the next several days, I hope your travels are safe.

I'd like to give a very special 'Merry Christmas' and 'Thank You' to the members of our Armed Forces for their selfless and brave service to our country. Though you may not be with your families now over the holidays, you are with us in our thoughts and prayers for safety, and we never forget your tremendous sacrifice for the safety of our country.

From my family to yours - I wish to you all a very Merry Christmas.

  8. The Topeka community lost two brave police officers last night. Our thoughts and prayers go to the families and fellow officers of these men. First responders put their lives in danger every day to ensure we all can live in peace and safety. May God bless all the men and women who risk their lives just as these men so bravely did.
  9. I had the privilege joining David Perryman and help the Salvation Army by ringing a bell at the Mission Hy Vee. Thank you, David, for all that you do to serve others, and living a life of generosity. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity around the Holidays to donate some time in the service of others.

  12. I just spoke on the House floor as a co-sponsor in support of the Frank Buckles World War I Memorial Act. This bill would designate the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial in Kansas City as THE national memorial and monument honoring the men and women who served in the Great War. Thanks to my friend and colleague Representative Emanuel Cleaver II for his effort on this legislation. Click below to watch my remarks.
