Medicare/Health: Description

Offering more than 60,000 grants a year assures the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) the title of largest grant-making agency in the Federal government. With a budget of $502 billion in 2003, HHS provides such programs as Head Start (pre-school education), substance abuse treatments, immunization services and Medicare. Medicare is the largest health insurer in the nation, handling more than 900 millon claims a year. In addition to these services, HHS oversees the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). HHS's website offers exercise and nutrition tips, flu vaccination information, and natural disaster procedures.
