Donnelly Announces Grant to Hire Galveston Police Officer

South Bend, Ind. — Today, Congressman Joe Donnelly announced that town of Galveston has received a $100,792 federal grant through the Department of Justice’s COPS Hiring Program to hire a police officer.

“I’m pleased that with this grant, the town of Galveston will be able to hire a police officer,” said Donnelly.  “While police departments across north central Indiana are facing budget shortfalls, we need to ensure that we have enough law enforcement officers keeping our communities safe.  I’m proud to support the efforts of our local police departments to receive this much-needed funding.”

“Receiving this grant is truly a blessing for our department and our community,” said Galveston Town Marshal Mike Clark. “Over the past several years we have seen a dramatic increase in crime. This grant will allow our department to come close to 24 hour per day coverage and help to better serve and protect the citizens of our community.”

The COPS Hiring Program (CHP) provides funding to address the full-time sworn officer needs of state and local law enforcement agencies across the country.  CHP grants go to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire career officers in an effort to increase their ability to police communities and prevent crime.  CHP provides salary and benefits for three years for newly-hired, full-time sworn officers.
