Ensuring the Safety of Pets during Emergencies: On October 6, 2006, Senator Lautenberg’s Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act (S. 2548) became law (Public Law No. 109-308). This law, which Lautenberg wrote with former Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK), requires state and local emergency preparedness authorities, with assistance and grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to account for the needs of people with pets or service animals in planning for major disasters.
