Lautenberg Responds to NRA Leader's "Reckless" Comments on Newtown TragedySenator Reiterates Call for Immediate Passage of High-Capacity Magazine BanLautenberg Press Office, 202-224-3224Friday, December 21, 2012 WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) expressed utter disbelief at National Rifle Association CEO and Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre’s comments in response to the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy. Lautenberg reiterated his call for a ban on high-capacity magazines, which were used in the attacks in Newtown, Aurora, Oak Creek, Tucson, and Virginia Tech, among others. “It is beyond belief that following the Newtown tragedy, the National Rifle Association’s leaders wants to fill our communities with guns and arm more Americans. The NRA points the finger of blame everywhere and anywhere it can, but they cannot escape the devastating effects of their reckless comments and irresponsible lobbying tactics. The NRA leadership is wildly out of touch with its own members, responsible gun owners, and the American public who want to close dangerous loopholes and enact common-sense gun safety reform. It is clear that their real priority is to help gun manufacturers sell more guns—not to protect our children or Americans’ rights. The extreme rhetoric of Wayne LaPierre and the NRA is disturbing and dangerous, and will only exacerbate America’s deadly culture of gun violence,” Lautenberg said. Senator Lautenberg has introduced the “Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act” to prohibit the manufacture and sale of ammunition magazines that have a capacity of, or could be readily converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. Earlier this week, Lautenberg announced his plans to reintroduce the bill on the first day of the 113th Congress if it is not passed in the coming weeks. Yesterday, Senator Lautenberg urged Vice President Biden to consider his gun safety reform proposals as part of the national task force on gun violence.
