WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Senate has approved a resolution cosponsored by U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) that honors the 100th birthday of Rosa Parks, whose civil rights activities in the 1950s helped change U.S. history.

The resolution observing her centennial birthday and commemorating her legacy was approved by unanimous consent Wednesday evening.  The measure, which had more than 50 cosponsors, was introduced by Senators Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.).

“It is fitting that on the anniversary of her birth that the nation observes the civil rights causes effectively promoted by Rosa Parks. Her work continues today through the institute she helped found and through her role in the modern history of the United States,” Cochran said.

In recounting Parks’ accomplishments and honors, the resolution “commemorates the legacy of Rosa Parks to inspire all people of the United States to stand up for freedom and the principles of the Constitution.”
