I firmly believe that the U.S. Constitution is the greatest governing document in history.  Yet it has always been known, that if it were just words on a page, it would amount to little. At the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, one of our greatest founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, was asked what kind of Government the Constitution gave us, “a Republic or a Monarchy?”  “A Republic,” Franklin replied, “If you can keep it.”

How true Franklin’s words were and how prophetic they have proven to be.

236 years ago this month, the U.S. declared its independence.  It has been governed by the same Constitution for 225 years.  It has grown to be the most powerful and prosperous nation in the face of the earth.  Yet we face serious problems in large part because we have forgotten our character and forgotten the wisdom of our founders and the Constitution they wrote. Many people have asked me about how I vote and how I make my decisions on votes...

First and foremost, I consult our Constitution.  I believe our Constitution is a sacred charter that, along with strong biblical values, made our nation great.   I ask, "does the Constitution allow this?   Or, does the Constitution prohibit this."  If there is no constitutional issue, I find out what you, my constituents, are saying by letters, by calls, by emails, or in person.

Use of the Constitutional Authority Statement

Recently the Republican Study Committee highlighted my use of the Constitutional Authority Statement in explaining my bill, The Wallow Fire Recovery and Monitoring Act (H.R. 2562). The RSC concluded, "a serious and thorough attempt has been made to constitutionally justify the legislation, and the resulting Constitutional Authority Statement is a strong one”.
