TUBE FOOD

This is tube food.

Tube food. ‘Nuff said. (Photo courtesy of the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center)

And clearly, it’s exactly what it sounds like.

Meals encapsulated in things that look like toothpaste tubes.  They come in all shapes and sizes, too.  From entrees to desserts and even soups and meats, the assortment of tube food is varied and vast.

Pretty cool, eh?

Now, you might be asking yourself why tubes?  Well, my first response to this would be why not?  They’re convenient, they’re compact, and they just look cool.  Meals in tube form, people.  Come on!

I think I saw an old science fiction movie like this.  They called it “the way of the future”.  Might have been an MST3K.

Okay, okay, so coolness factor aside, there is an actual reason for these things to exist.  And it all leads to U-2.

Asteroid FlyBy On Friday

I spy with my little eye something…asteroid-y.

Okay, it’s an asteroid.  And it’s HEADED RIGHT FOR US!

*ahem*

I apologize for the intentional panic-inducing ALL CAPS up there.  But I mean really, how often does one get the chance to say that an asteroid is coming and have it actually be true?  Because it’s coming!

Well it’s headed in our direction on Friday.

On Feb. 15th an asteroid about half the size of a football field will fly past Earth closer than many man-made satellites. Since regular sky surveys began in the 1990s, astronomers have never seen an object so big come so close to our planet.

Get your telescopes out, folks!  This one’s going to set some records.

NASA: Change the World

What’s it like to be in a NASA wind tunnel holding a wand releasing a stream of smoke across the wing of a 2,500 pound aircraft model? Student researcher Jonathan Lichtwardt tells us, and says his NASA experience made him feel good because he’s doing work that can “change the world.”

The Eco-friendly Future Of U.S. Army Technologies

Check out the U.S. Army‘s fuel-efficient demonstrator, or FED.

The FED sports a number of fuel-saving technologies, such as low-rolling resistance tires, and optimized super turbo charged engine, lightweight aluminum armored cab, and it’s 70% more fuel efficient.

Now, you won’t see troops rolling all over the globe in these eco-friendly babies just yet, but it does serve as an example of the kind of technologies that are being researched and developed for the U.S. military forces.

The latest version of the Apache Block III attack helicopter, the AH-64E, was approved for full rate production in October 2012.  Improvements to the aircraft include an Improved Drive System, increased engine capabilities, technologically advanced composite main rotor blades and sensor enhancements.

“But just as important as the technology, is how we worked cooperatively with the program managers to ensure a successful transition,” said Dr. Bill Lewis, Aviation Development Director at the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center.

Anticipating The Age Of Surprise

We live in an age of many things.

The Age of Technology.  The Age of Innovation.  The Age of Declarative Titles.  Okay maybe not that last one, but you get what I’m saying.  This 21st century is riddled with exciting invention, progression and descriptive words, so I’m not for a lack of topic when it comes to discussing the now.

But what about the future?

Ominous, no?

Ladies, gentlemen, aliens, robots of all makes and models…Welcome to the Age of Surprise.  Blog post.

Air Force Colonel Edward L. Vaughan is the ANG Advisor to the Commander and President at Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.  His job?  Thinking ahead.  Specifically technologically.

“You’ve got be ready for something to happen that you’re not ready to have happen.”

Meaning it’s time to expect the unexpected, which can be a bit of a challenge (contradiction notwithstanding).  So how is Col. Vaughan and his team there at Air University doing just that?  By using YouTube, of course.

No, seriously.

The Navy’s Energy-Efficient Mini-Mart

U.S. Naval Base Guam held a new energy-efficient mini-mart groundbreaking ceremony.  In light of the Secretary of the Navy‘s energy goals, re-certification is the Navy‘s way of ensuring that its facilities maximize opportunities for energy savings.

“This is a brand new gas station mini-mart being built,” says Phil Harrison, District Vice President at Naval Exchange Guam.

“It’s going to be at least thirty percent more efficient as far as energy is concerned.”

Cold sodas, convenient gas pumps, and it’s all using energy more effectively.  Check this out:
