What Happened

On 8 June, 2011, top websites and Internet service providers around the world, including GoogleFacebookYahoo!Akamai and Limelight Networks joined together with more than 1000 other participating websites in World IPv6 Day for a successful global-scale trial of the new Internet Protocol, IPv6.

By providing a coordinated 24-hour “test flight”, the event helped demonstrate that major websites around the world are well-positioned for the move to a global IPv6-enabled Internet, enabling its continued exponential growth.

Results

World IPv6 Day was an extraordinary example of how the Internet industry can come together to promote a technology vital to its future success. The Internet Society collected some of the many articles, presentations, and videos delivered around the world since June.

What's Next

Major ISPs, home networking equipment manufacturers, and web companies around the world are coming together to permanently enable IPv6 for their products and services by 6 June 2012.
 
Organised by the Internet Society, and building on the successful one-day World IPv6 event held on 8 June 2011, World IPv6 Launch represents a major milestone in the global deployment of IPv6. As the successor to the current Internet Protocol, IPv4, IPv6 is critical to the Internet's continued growth as a platform for innovation and economic development.
