In 1913, Ralph De Palma won the Vanderbilt Cup Race on Long Island, driving a Mercedes on a set of Braender tires, which lasted the entire 500 miles without a tire change. So, is this DePalma? Might be -- and maybe he was planning to repeat his feat now, in 1914?

Braender Bulldog tires were manufactured by a company in East Rutherford, New Jersey, that had been founded in 1912 by Philip Braender, a German immigrant. (When Braender died in 1916, he left a million bucks to his wife and children. The tire company continued on into the 1920s.)

technogeo points out that this photo was taken by an Indianapolis studio -- so, presumably in Indianapolis. De Palma won the Indy 500 race in 1915 (and nearly won in 1912) driving a Mercedes racer. He won other races elsewhere as well, in Mercedes.

His Wikipedia bio includes a photo of him with his riding mechanic, Tom Alley, in his 1912 Indy car. It probably was this one -- which is now an exhibit in the Indy hall of fame museum.
