    Taft Family

Here is article about their mother:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louise_Taft
it identifies his only sister as being: Frances Louise "Fanny" Taft (Edwards), (1866-1950). She married San Diego surgeon William A. Edwards . She lived to be 84 and here is her obit:

Dr. Edwards' obit is below, unfortunately it says that he left behind just his widow, so these two lovely children pre-deceased their parents.

"Fanny"? Butt? I sense a trend here.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was actually Butt's sister, by the wording.

Major Butt went down with the Titanic, so I'm adding a Titanic tag.

Thank goodness she was Fanny Edwards and not Fanny Butt.

By this point in his life, Taft was sitting on Major Butt.

The caption doesn't make sense as Frances Louise (Taft) Edwards, big Bill's only sister, had no children.

The woman in the photo is actually Nellie Taft's sister, Lucy Laughlin. (Lucy's husband Thomas was the person who was cut out of the photograph, possibly because he later committed suicide.) The two children are the Laughlin children, and Captain Archie Butt was President Taft's military ADC who later lost his life on the Titanic.
