Francisco "Pancho" Villa (June 5, 1877 – July 23, 1923), famed Mexican revolutionary and guerrilla leader.

A cropped version of this image is used on the cover of A & E's Biography DVD, Pancho Villa: Outlaw Hero.

Notice that he signed this like a promotional picture. Not surprising, since he was quite media-savvy for his day, having starred as himself in a movie which helped propel him into legend.

Francisco Villa, or Mexican revolution General Francisco (" Pancho") Villa, better known as "El Centauro del Norte" (The Northern Centaur), fought along with Emiliano Zapata during a painful Mexican revolution. Among other things, and jokes, he became a legend for his people. Gral. Pancho Viilla, however, was chased into Mexico by US Army General "Blackjack" Pershing, when Gral. Villa entered US territory. Villa, was known to be liked and feared by his peers, some say for hasty decisions among other anecdotes. Gral. Villa loved his Stetson hat. This is a great photo of General Villa !!! Mexican Revolutionaries often raided Mexican military trains and captured their weapons. The 30-30 US Winchester and the German Mausser were weapons used by warring parties throughout the Mexican Revolution, which targeted rich landowners, corrupt politians and illiterate peasants seeking agrarian reforrms. Kaiser''s Germany's presence in Mexico with obvious hostile intentions was reported.

En realidad, por difamaciones en su tiempo, no se tiene claro, pero Francisco Villa y Emiliano Zapata, fueron los unicos heroes de la Revolución, que peleaban con y por los campesinos.

He's the reason my grandfather came to the USA at 14. His father, Catarino Ordaz, told him, "That Pancho Villa, he ain't nothing but a horsethief! You may as well go live in America. I hear it's nice there too. Why don't you go and see, son, before he puts you in his loco army." It became a source of a funny story in our ancestry, which nonetheless never redeemed the feelings of loss and longing. "Mexico Lindo y Querido" makes us all weep here, because of grandpa.

ha,ha,ha, but for some peasants and hungry Mexican farmers, General Francisco Villa, also known as "Pancho" Villa and Emiliano Zapata were the "hope" of struggling folks against currupted government and the military, even when some "revolutionaries" turned to banditry and lawlessness and robbers themselves. See book "Los de Abajo" by Mariano Azuela.

Villa was also known as "El Centauro del Norte", "The Northern Centaur", since he was born in one of the northen Mexican states, and he was fond to sport an American Stetson hat, ha,ha,ha. Villa was chased by US Cavalry General "Blackjack" Pershing into Mexico, when he entered US soil in a hostile fashion.

wow, cool, Pancho Villa! my dad's uncle was sent with the National Guard from here in New Mexico to go to the border when Persing was there and "control" Pancho Villa and his men when they were crossing into NM-- they were a bunch of 20 year old kids to face down Pancho Villa and his men. lol but they did come home with some fun stories. my dad told me about this. nice to see this, brought up good memories.

Not a bad shot of Villa in black and white taken on a glass negative.
I like the background of Villa's men and probably captured supplies, although the light is flat a result of shooting with an overhead sun on one hot and arid day in the life of Pancho Villa. The ammo on Villa's chest is another good touch, all threatening and macho in this gritty posed portrait of the fierce Robin Hood. Viva Zapata!
