Fire and Ice: Kamchatka Peninsula, Eastern Russia
Fire and Ice: Kamchatka Peninsula, Eastern Russia Fire and Ice: Kamchatka Peninsula, Eastern Russia

The topography of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula reflects the region's volcanic roots and the power of glacial forces. A chain of active volcanoes makes up the peninsula's spine, known as Sredinnyy Khrebet. Ancient and recent glaciers have carved the broad valleys and jagged ridges common here. Lava, ash and pyroclastic flows have filled and smoothed the otherwise rugged terrain, revealing the relative youth of the volcanism.
