- My thoughts and prayers are with the Newtown, Connecticut, community and their families. Tragedies of this magnitude committed against innocent children are beyond comprehension. As a lifelong advocate of education, I was pained to hear that these events took place in a classroom - an environment where children should feel safe to learn, dream and grow. - I want to congratulate Ms. Concepción Niño of Mission, Texas, on her 100th birthday. A member from my staff presented her today with a Congressional Certificate of Recognition. I wish her many more years of health and happiness.

After passing the U.S. Senate with an amendment, my bill passed the U.S. House today (397-4) and will be sent to the President’s desk for signature. - Taxes on the table: Failing to extend tax cuts on those making less than $250K/year would take $200 billion from consumer spending in 2013.This means consumer spending – which accounts for 70% of economy – would reduce by 1.7 percentage points. As we approach the holidays, middle-class consumers cannot afford the threat of tax increases.
