CT-N Earns Excellence in Journalism Award for Coverage of 2011 Inauguration Day
Hartford, CT – On May 24th, the Society of Professional Journalists – Connecticut Chapter awarded the Connecticut Network its Excellence in Journalism for In-Depth Television Reporting coverage of the 2011 Inauguration Day at the State Capitol. The coverage was comprised highlights from CT-N’s Complete Coverage of Inauguration & Opening Day with Diane Smith, recorded on January 5, 2011, which ran nine hours and 43 minutes. The coverage was available on CT-N and through a live webstream at CT-N.com. The award was given to Paul Giguere, CEO and President of CT-N’s parent company, Connecticut Public Affairs Network at the Annual Connecticut SPJ Awards Dinner.
“For 14 years, the Connecticut Network has brought state government to the homes of people across the state,” said Paul Giguere. “Each year, we push ourselves to make state government more transparent and it’s an honor to be recognized for our work.”
Inauguration Day coverage was a network-wide undertaking. The set was built on the main level of the State Capitol, right in the middle of the action. The day began with CT-N’s Diane Smith, welcoming viewers to the Capitol and outlining the day’s events. Cameras were live at every big event of the day from swearing in ceremonies of the new classes of State Senators and Representatives, to the traditional Inaugural day parade, followed by the largest Inaugural Swearing In ceremony that the state has ever held. During the course of this nearly 10-hour day, Diane interviewed past legislators, a former First Lady of Connecticut, current legislative leaders, newspaper reporters and constitutional officers.
The show required crews at multiple locations across the State Capitol campus including the State Armory, Senate and House Chambers, Legislative Office Building and outdoors. Producers were on deck to track down on-air guests and keep the show on its pace. Producers and caption technicians stationed in the office managed the graphics and captions on the multiple shoots.
CT-N is available full-time on expanded basic cable statewide. Visit ct-n.com to find the channel location for the network in your community or watch online. All Connecticut Network programming is closed captioned for the hearing impaired.
Nominated for a 2012 Boston/New England Emmy Awards, Winner of a 2012 Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists Excellence in Journalism Award, Winner of the national Sunshine Award from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Open Government Award from the Connecticut Foundation for Open Government, the Connecticut Network is the state’s source for complete and balanced television and webcast coverage of state government and public affairs.
