Differing Deficit Numbers, Common Core Implementation and Longer School Days

This Week on CT-N Capitol Report: Week in Review

Hartford, CT – Starting at 7 p.m. this Friday, Connecticut Network viewers can hear the latest on the state financial crisis on this week’s episode of Capitol Report: Week in Review. State Comptroller Kevin Lembo announced this week that his state budget numbers differed by $50 million or more as compared to Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s earlier predications. Regardless of the precise number, state agencies and other groups that rely on state funding began discussing the potential impact on the loss of funds. Governor Malloy also took time to discuss the use of private funding for public programs at the Connecticut Association for Human Services Forums on Innovations in Financing: Private Investment, Public Good.

Capitol Report this week also includes highlights from this month’s state Board of Education meeting where the latest Common Core Standards discussion moved from the planning stages to the implementation stages. Another education highlight this week will include Governor Malloy as he traveled to Washington, D.C. to accept federal funding to extend classroom time for state students. The money will add up to 300 additional hours as Connecticut is one of five states taking part in the national pilot program. The show will also include clips from the most recent Racial Profiling Prohibition Project Advisory Board meeting as they began a progress report detailing challenges ahead.
