Christian McCaffrey, Valor Christian’s standout playmaker, was named Colorado’s Gatorade player of the year this morning.

McCaffrey, a junior, is primarily a running back, but the Eagles often line him up in the slot as well. He’s rushed for 1,264 yards and 22 touchdowns this season, and also has 14 receiving touchdowns. He also has three returns for scores, and has a defensive touchdown. In Valor’s last two games, McCaffrey has 11 total touchdowns.

“The issue with Christian is just how many different things that he can do,” Valor Christian coach Brent Vieselmeyer said Wednesday.

Said Legacy coach Wayne Voorhees, in a release: “We couldn’t stop him at all.”

McCaffrey, the son of former Broncos wide receiver Ed, has a 3.36 GPA. He is now a finalist for the national player of the year award.

Former Highlands Ranch athlete Joe Hansley, now at Colorado State, won the award last season.

Valor Christian plays Cherokee Trail in the Class 5A championship game on Saturday.

Kent Denver’s Gatorade moment

What a great game it was today between Kent Denver and Platte Valley. A real shame someone had to lose, as they say. Platte Valley lost, 28-17 to Kent Denver, but their fighting spirit is something that I won’t forget anytime soon.
The Sun Devils made the big plays in the end, though, most especially the 67-yard scoring run by senior Brannan Jones that turned a 17-14 Platte Valley lead into a 21-17 Sun Devils lead, with just under seven minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Here is some video of the aftermath of Kent Denver’s first state football championship since 1991, starting off with a Gatorade dump on coach Scott Yates – then followed by two players tackling him to the ground! Jones, No. 25, helps with the tackle.

Giving thanks for the opportunity to practice on Thanksgiving Day

Of course, and just like most everyone else who had the opportunity, Colorado football players still alive in the playoffs ate heartily on Thanksgiving Day.

But these guys weren’t like the joggers you saw Thursday morning or the people out and about walking their dogs or riding bicycles or just out for a stroll.
