Today I participated in a Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing about the federal response to Hurricane Sandy, and discussed how we can help those still suffering from its effects while better preparing for the next disaster.

Hurricane Sandy should be a major wake up call. When disaster strikes, our densely-populated urban areas and economic centers must be able to recover quickly. If we are going to invest billions of dollars in rebuilding storm-ravaged areas, we should do so in a way that will protect people from future storms.- LikesSee All

Mold and other toxins have become major problems for New Yorkers affected by Hurricane Sandy. Given our recent history with environmental hazards caused by the collapse of the World Trade Center, we know all too well the dangers presented b...y indoor contamination. We must not repeat the same mistakes of 9/11 by leaving people to their own devices to clean up complex toxins without proper guidance or assistance from the federal government. I am calling on the EPA and FEMA to make very clear their plans and policies to safely and efficiently address this.See More

http://www.ny1.com/content/173043/rapid-repair-program-focuses-on-heat--power-but-not-mold- Today’s vote at the UN will unfortunately do nothing to advance the cause of peace between Israelis and Palestinians or to create two secure states. Peace and security can never be achieved unilaterally, but only through committed two-party negotiations. Only direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations can result in a viable two-state solution – with an independent Palestinian state established with adequate and agreed upon security guarantees for Israel. I truly hope that we can soon return to good faith, bilateral negotiations.

Today I introduced a bi-partisan resolution to pledge all necessary assistance to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. It commits Congress to cutting through bureaucracy to provide immediate assistance, to help rebuild homes and businesses, to repair the infrastructure that was damaged, and to work to reemerge as a nation that is stronger and better prepared for disasters.Congressman Jerry Nadler shared a link.
Gay City News discusses the prospects for LGBT equality legislation in the next Congress, including the repeal of DOMA and passage of ENDA and UAFA, my bill to end discrimination against legally married, bi-national couples.- Today I surveyed NYC small businesses affected by Sandy with U.S. Small Business Administration Administrator Karen Mills, Borough President Scott M. Stringer, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Assemblywoman Deborah Glick, State Senator Dani...el Squadron, and CB 1 Chair Catherine McVay Hughes. We showed Administrator Mills the widespread damage to local businesses and discussed the importance of maximizing federal assistance to those who are struggling.See More

This week’s progress in advancing the rights of LGBT Americans is undeniable. With victory for marriage equality initiatives in three states, the election of my friend Tammy Baldwin as the first openly gay U.S. Senator, the election of a r...ecord number of openly LGBT Members of the House, and the reelection of a President who supports the freedom of all Americans to legally marry whichever person they choose, we have made significant strides toward equality. I am elated by this progress and I look forward to returning to Congress with the knowledge that our nation is truly changing.See More
I also would like to take this profound moment in our national history to challenge my colleagues in Congress, Democrats and Republicans alike, governors and state legislators across the country, and people in positions of power everywhere to join our movement now. Now is the time for courageous leadership that will guide Americans toward a not-so-distant future when ALL Americans are truly equal. I urge you to join us now or you will become increasingly irrelevant, isolated, and ignored amidst an unmistakable reality. So, let us pass the Respect for Marriage Act to repeal DOMA, let us achieve marriage equality in each state, and let us declare that LGBT Americans have the same rights to love, happiness, family, and equality as all Americans – and let us do it NOW.
http://nadler.house.gov/press-release/nadler-major-victories-lgbt-rights-week-congress-and-states-must-join-march-toward- Next week, we return to Washington with a critical task before the end of the 112th Congress -- to avert the crisis of the "Fiscal Cliff" brought by sequestration and tax increases. I joined Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney today in releasing a detailed, must-read report on the potential impacts on New York City:

Once the focus shifts from emergency response and recovery to prevention, it is time to have a serious discussion about planning for the next crisis. This means real investment in infrastructure safeguards and preventive technologies. We cannot allow the next disaster to hit us unprepared:
