Schakowsky Statement in Honor of Veterans Day PDF Print

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 11, 2012) – Today, Rep. Schakowsky (D-Ill.) released the following statement in honor of Veterans Day:

“Last week, Americans went to the polls to exercise our right to choose our government.  We enjoy these fundamental values because generations of American men and women have been willing to risk their lives in service of our country.  Today, we honor all veterans – all men and women who fought to defend our nation and our democratic ideals and freedoms.  We owe them an immense debt of gratitude.

As we celebrate Veterans Day, our deeds must match our words.  We have an obligation to all those who serve – to ensure that they have access to the benefits they’ve earned and the services that they need when they come home.  We must help them transition back to civilian life – as President Obama said in his election night speech, to ensure that 'no-one who fights for this country ever has to fight for a job or a roof over their head when they come home.'  Veterans must have access to quality and affordable medical care, including mental health services.

We will face difficult challenges in the coming weeks and months, and there will be fierce debate in Washington about slashing the federal budget.  In this difficult fiscal climate, it is important that we protect critical veterans’ benefits and services from cuts.  I promise to continue to fight efforts to reduce veterans’ benefits in Washington, and to support initiatives to ensure that all veterans and servicemembers, together with their families, have access to the highest quality services. I join with all Americans in commemorating our veterans on this special day.”
