Phillies agree to one-year, $2.5 million contract with left-hander John Lannan

UPDATE: CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that it’s a one-year deal with a $2.5 million base salary. He could make an additional $2.5 million in performance incentives. Given what we’ve seen in this market, this is a pretty nice deal for the Phillies.
10:50 AM: John Lannan was non-tendered by the Nationals last month, but he’s sticking around in the National League East.
Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Phillies have agreed to a contract with Lannan, pending a physical. No word yet on the terms involved.
Lannan was the odd man out in the Nationals’ rotation this past season, as he spent most of the year in the minors, but he posted a 4.13 ERA and 17/14 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings in six starts with the big club. The 28-year-old southpaw owns a 4.01 ERA over six seasons in the majors.
The Phillies had a need for another starter after trading Vance Worley in the Ben Revere deal, so Lannan fits the bill. He’s set to join a rotation which projects to include Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee and Kyle Kendrick.

Agreed. I wish him all the best. He could have been real vocal about what happened to him last year. But as a Nats fan, I am not real worried about facing him.

Lannan was vocal. He begged for a trade, showed his displeasure, but had no choice in the end. That ERA in the majors isnt telling. He pitched extremely poorly when he was in the minors, poorly in the majors and had like 2 decent games against 4 bad ones. The guy isnt a very good pitcher. His pitching is predictable, his command isnt great, he doesnt throw hard, plays poor defense, and gets rocked like clockwork 3rd time through the order. This is a good thing he is gone, and signed with a rival. He will not do that well. So wish him well and all, but id bet any loyalties Nats fan have towards him is becuz he was with us for so long and was our opening day started a couple times. So was Livan Hernandez…

Unfortunately for Lannan he was kept in the minors most of last year as Nationals pitching depth. He’s a serviceable #4 or 5 starter that can eat innings…he probably would have made at least double what he just signed for if he’d been in the bigs the whole year…

Lannan does NOT eat innings. His innings pitched per start has been falling since his sophomore campaign and last year bottomed out at 5.32. As a Nats fan, I appreciate what Lannan did for the team during the lean years, but he is a marginal MLB pitcher right now.

“Bottomed out”? He had 6 starts last year….do the words “small sample size” mean anything to you?
He is the #5 starter. All they need him to do is win half his starts.

Potentially very good move by Lannan, his representation, and the Phils. By staying in NL East he will face weakened Mets & Fish, and has always done well vs. Braves (9 wins, 3.20 ERA). Could set up a longer term deal for ’14 and beyond.
